How does one describe Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping? A breakdown of the premise is pretty straightforward. IMDB writes, "When it becomes clear that his solo album is a failure, a former boy band member does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status." And that is not incorrect. But the movie is so much more.
You should know what you are getting into, though, and this is especially true if you plan on watching the movie with loads of family and friends. The film has so many epic one-liners and situations that you will happily repeat the words for months. It might become like a second language.
Popstar is a bit like The Jerk, too. Andy Samberg's Connor is not quite as naive as Steve Martin's character, but neither is a bad person. They simply accidentally do things that would be viewed negatively by others. Why they are seen in a bad light at times is beyond them.
Andy Samberg's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has arrived on Netflix
Both films are comedy gold, too. Are there moments of drama? Of course, no good comedy lacks that, as it helps build toward the emotional release by laughing. The magic comes when a movie can turn a lead character who lacks self-awareness into someone empathetic and likeable. At this, Popstar succeeds on a grand scale.
Samberg has always been one of the more underrated comedic actors. He does not strive to win Oscars but simply to entertain. He is a younger version of Adam Sandler. Both can be goofy on screen, but both are intelligent enough to do the dirty work behind the scenes that makes a movie work.
In the case of Popstar, Samberg is the lead, of course, but he also co-wrote and co-produced the film with his Lonely Planet chums. It is clear that the movie was fun to make (and there are enough cameos to know that others wanted to be involved), and viewers are passed along that joy. The flick might have been released in 2016, but it feels fresh.
And oddly, though Connor has seemingly left his boy band behind in search of individual admiration, he might find he needs his mates. Does he do so reluctantly and joylessly? You will have to log in to Netflix and watch to find out.
