The Lincoln Lawyer author Michael Connelly's latest comments about the show's future suggest he wasn't in support of Netflix's decision to end the show with season 5.

When Netflix announced that The Lincoln Lawyer would be ending with a fifth and final season, fans were understandably shocked.

Not only has The Lincoln Lawyer remained a strong performer for Netflix since its launch in 2022, but the show had not yet run out of source material. Each season of the show has adapted a book in Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer series, which consists of eight books; the most recent of the series, The Proving Ground, having only just been released in October 2025. Needless to say, there is plenty of source material left for the show to adapt, giving the creative team behind the show materials for at least eight seasons.

Considering the popularity of the show and the fact that there are still books in the series that have not been adapted for the screen, you would have thought that The Lincoln Lawyer would have continued for at least a few more seasons before finally signing off the air. Instead, Netflix decided to close out the show with its fifth season, and it seems this was a decision that Connelly might not have been in support of.

Connelly is currently promoting his newest book, The Hollow, which happens to feature Mickey Haller in a supporting role. During the promotional efforts for the book, The Lincoln Lawyer has naturally come up with fans offering up their support of the series and sharing their disappointment in the decision to end the show with a fifth season.

“I can't begin to say how sad I am to read that Lincoln Lawyer will not air after season 5. This is such a great show,” remarked one fan on Threads, who then took the opportunity to beg for more seasons. “Michael, won't you please reconsider producing more seasons? Please?”

Rather than ignoring the message, Connelly replied to the fan and seemed to make it clear he was not the one who decided to end the show: that was on Netflix, and only they have the power to order more seasons.

“That’s a Netflix decision,” Connelly quipped.

He’s not wrong, as at the end of the day, it’s Netflix that holds the cards and has the final say in whether a show lives or dies. But his decision to acknowledge the fan’s plea for more seasons is certainly telling, as it suggests that he might not have been game on the decision to end the show with season 5 and agrees with the fans that there is still more story to tell. After all, if he was part of the decision to end the show, his response likely would have been very different, and that it would have simply shown support to Netflix rather than putting the ball in Netflix’s court.

It is still puzzling that Netflix is ending The Lincoln Lawyer as the show has been a ratings success and is one of the rare Netflix shows that has actually managed to release a season on a near-annual cadence. Given the speculation of a spinoff, it’s clear Netflix knows the value in the series and wants to find a way to turn it into a franchise. That’s great, and we’ll welcome a spinoff, but we’d much rather get more seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer.

Netflix has reversed course in the past, such as when it extended Lucifer's run for another season after promoting season 5 as the show's last, so perhaps they'll reconsider The Licoln Lawyer's fate as well. We know fans would certainly love more seasons, and it sounds like Connelly is in support of this as well.
