Netflix may have found a way to keep The Lincoln Lawyer alive after season 5

The Lincoln Lawyer might be coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season, but it seems Netflix is looking to continue the series via an unexpected new spinoff!

While nothing has been confirmed just yet, Deadline reports that Netflix is fast-tracking a Lincoln Lawyer spinoff set to be headlined by Cobie Smulders, who was first introduced in the closing moments of season 4 as Mickey Haller’s half-sister Artemisia “Emi” Finch. Little is known about the plot of the spinoff, which makes sense given we only just met Emi in the season 4 finale and don’t know much about her character. Clearly, though, the creative team feels confident fans will embrace the character, who will be playing a major role in the final season of The Lincoln Lawyer.

Season 4 ended with Mickey running into Emi at the grocery store’s produce department before she approached him outside in the parking lot. Before she could say anything, though, she tackled him to the ground just as gunfire erupted. After Agent Ruth took in Garzarian’s men, that’s when Emi dropped a major bombshell on Mickey by introducing herself as his half-sister.

Smulders will appear in a series regular role in season 5 after she comes to Mickey to seek his help in freeing a wrongfully convicted woman. Having literally just had his own name cleared in a miscarriage of justice, Mickey decides to take on a habeas petition to overturn the murder conviction. Of course, this being The Lincoln Lawyer, the case will not be cut and dried and will send Mickey down a dangerous rabbit hole as he uncovers a web of corruption and lies and faces nefarious forces working against him.

Considering that Emi was created for the show to help fill the void of Harry Bosch, who is Mickey’s half-brother in Michael Connelly’s books but was unable to be used in the show due to the rights to Bosch being owned by Amazon, it seems safe to assume Emi will be a member of law enforcement. Season 5 will be based on Resurrection Walk, which sees Bosch coming to Mickey for help investigating the wrongful conviction.

At the moment, Smulders is the only Lincoln Lawyer cast member connected to the spinoff; however, it seems likely Manuel Garcia Rulfo might make the occasional appearance in the spinoff or at the very least guest star in the premiere of the pilot to help pass the baton. A script for the series is being written by the creative team behind The Lincoln Lawyer and was pitched to Netflix shortly after the decision was made to end the series with The Lincoln Lawyer season 5.

Netflix is reportedly excited about the project, which makes sense given the popularity of The Lincoln Lawyer. While we’re sad to see the show coming to an end, it’s exciting to think it could live on via a new spinoff starring Smulders.
