There are a few things we can count on happening every year, and that pretty much boils down to paying taxes and binge-watching a new season of The Diplomat. Thankfully, Netflix has managed to keep the Emmy Award-nominated, fan-favorite political thriller on an annual release cadence rather than taking the unfortunately all too normal two-year hiatus.
Just last week, The Diplomat star Keri Russell spilled the beans on when the fourth season would be released on Netflix, confirming that the series would once again return this fall. However, the streamer has now offered official details on the highly anticipated new episodes, sharing both the release date, teaser, synopsis, and first-look images to preview the drama to come.
The Diplomat season 4 release date and teaser
It's time to mark your calendars and start the countdown. The Diplomat season 4 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, which is technically less than one year since season 3's release. (The third season dropped on Oct. 16 last year.) The season contains another gripping eight episodes, which are previewed in the ever so slightly bone-chilling teaser. Watch in the video below!
In The Diplomat season 4 teaser, Kate opens the clip by saying, "I'm not trying to get out of the marriage. I'm trying to get back in. We do high highs and really low lows. The fights are gonna be spicy." Based on where Kate left off in season 3, rocked by the revelation of Hal and Penn stealing the Poseidon missile, it's clear that she's trying to appeal to her husband to let her back in.
But Hal quickly follows up Kate's matter-of-fact plea with, "You can't keep doing this to me." Regardless of the impasse they might be currently at in the marriage, the teaser shows Kate and Hal sitting in a stunning church as Kate recommits herself to Hal with impromptu vows. Is it sincere or is it just another effort for self-preservation amid a challenging administration?
We'll have to wait and see where Kate's motivations lie this time around, but The Diplomat season 4 teaser also showcases, through a series of fast-paced clips, some impending chaos befalling the team. The administration appears to be rushed inside a building and away from danger, and in another clip, Kate crouches on the ground looking very panicked. That can't be good!
Netflix shared the official synopsis for season 4: "In season 4 ofThe Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home."

The challenges of the presidency aren't only a source of conflict for Kate and Hal. The President and First Gentlemnet, Grace and Todd, are also feeling the pangs. Because Penn and Hal seem to be pulling further away from their spouses and closer to tearing down their country's safety, Kate and Todd join forces to form their own alliance to stop their better halves before its too late.
Once again, The Diplomat season 4 contains eight new episodes, which will be released all at once. There are no split seasons here or a decreased episode count. There's also no indication that Netflix intends to end the hit series with this season, seeing as it's more beloved and acclaimed than ever going into its latest Emmys season with its most nominations yet.
