When a show you love ends its most recent with a huge cliffhanger that you didn't see coming, the wait for the next season feels longer than it is in reality. Still, that's how it's been feeling for The Diplomat fans after the season 3 finale left us as shell-shocked as Kate Wyler upon the revelation that the President and Vice President were up to no good.

The political thriller starring Keri Russell has quickly become one of Netflix's key shows thanks to its critical acclaim and constant success during award season. Currently, The Diplomat is up for seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, ahead of the fourth season's premiere later this year. But there's even better news now that Russell teased when season 4 drops this year.

The Diplomat season 4 expected to release in October 2026

Netflix previously confirmed that The Diplomat season 4 would debut before the end of 2026, and Russell has also confirmed in which month the new episodes will drop. In an interview with Variety alongside partner Matthew Rhys, Russell revealed that the fourth season premieres in October 2026 on Netflix, though didn't provide an exact date within the month.

Russell and Rhys took part in game of how well they know each other, and when the outlet asked in which season of The Diplomat Russell's character Kate Wyler would become the President of the United States, Rhys joked it would be in the ninth season while Russel simply said, "Let's watch in October." There's our reveal of when the fourth season drops on Netflix.

It's not too much of a surprise that the new season arrives this fall, considering the streaming service previously stating that season 4 would bow in 2026. Considering filming just wrapped up this summer, there weren't too many options for when Netflix would release the season. But know we know that November and December are off the table, according to Russell.

The Diplomat has been a consistent annual fixture on Netflix since its debut back in April 2023 with the second and third seasons each shifting to October releases in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Clearly, Netflix isn't diverging from the October timeframe with season 4 either. It's the perfect time of the year for a political thriller and the key release window for premium shows aiming for award nominations.

While we received the update that filming had wrapped, and even also learned the titles for all eight episodes of the fourth season, Netflix hasn't shared a first look in the form of any photos or teasers. Leading up to the Emmy Awards in September, the cast and crew of the series have been taking part in a promotional push in order to be fresh in the minds of voters.

But this push will lead right into The Diplomat season 4 this fall, picking up in the wake of Kate learning Penn and Hal's role in stealing the Poseidon missile. In their Variety video, Rhys joked that Hal dies, but we probably shouldn't take that as a real tease for what's to come in season 4. While probably not that dramatic, another power shift might be coming up this season.
