Warning: Minor spoilers ahead from Territory on Netflix.

Once you start watching Territory on Netflix, buckle up for a bumpy ride. The Australian Western drama doesn't let up from beginning to end, with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your jaw on the floor. And after watching that ending, you might be wanting season 2.

Territory takes place on Marianne Station, a massive and powerful cattle ranch that's in the midst of structural changes. Following the death of one of their own, the Lawson family's plans for succession go up in flames, leaving the door open for rivals and locals to attempt to snag a piece of the pie.

Without giving away the juiciest secrets and surprises from the series, let's talk about that truly explosive season finale and discuss whether a second season is actually necessary after all the cards are laid out on the table. What could be next for the Lawsons and Marianne Station?

Colin learns the truth about Daniel

In the first episode of Territory, the Lawson family are left reeling after Daniel Lawson, the named successor to Marianne Station, is found dead on the land. He was shot, left for dead, and mauled by a pack of dingoes. The family faces the tragedy with the reality that this puts the future of Marianne Station into disarray. Who takes over? Graham and Emily? Susie? Marshall?

Throughout the six-episode season, the Lawsons navigate the push and pull from rivals, a billionaire miner, and natives as they try their hardest to keep their cattle station in the family. Colin initially wants to name his grandson Marshall the heir of Marianne Station, surpassing his son and Marshall's troubled father Graham as well as his totally game and dedicated granddaughter Susie.

By the end of the season, Colin discovers the truth about Daniel's shooting and subsequent death just as he had named new successors for Marianne Station. He hands over the keys and literally two seconds later is handed the bullets that left his son unable to save himself from the dingoes. It's a shocking moment! Until this revelation, we had expected the culprit to get away with it.

Territory season 2 isn't necessary

Even though the Territory ending allows for the story to continue now that the game's changed, continuing the story isn't actually something that needs to happen. Some might disagree, but the ending isn't a cliffhanger. Sure, there are questions left lingering about what happens next, but after the final sequence, we know everything the three characters involved in the scene know.

These six episodes overall tell a complete story about the ownership and succession of Marianne Station. If season 2 were to happen, many of the season 1 cast members likely wouldn't reprise their roles due to the large number of character deaths that occur in the season and the finale shootout. Still, new characters could obviously be introduced for a new story.

Marshall doesn't die in Territory, which isn't a spoiler to reveal, but he does choose to leave Marianne Station behind at the end of episode 6. Too much has happened for him to stick around. In the event of a second season renewal, the writers would have to find another urgent reason for Marshall to return home to Marianne, or Sam Corlett likely wouldn't be a series regular.

Netflix hasn't indicated whether Territory was meant to be a limited series or if a second season could be ordered if the first run receives enough viewership. Personally, I don't think Territory season 2 needs to happen unless there's a story to tell that's as good or better than that of season 1. We'll wait and see what Netflix decides and keep fans updates on the fate of the drama series.
