Stephen King's presence in the cultural milieu never fully went away, but he is making a bit of a comeback from dipping in popularity. At least, as far as consistent adaptations of his work. That is completely changing currently and will continue to do so.

In 2024, MAX put out a series based on King's novel, Salem's Lot. It was not perfect, but at least it tried to stick to what the author had produced. Taking a book and making it into a full series is tricky. A film adaptation would have probably been the wiser choice.

The Monkey, based on a short story by King, was a recent theatrical release. Amazon MGM Studios and the fantastic Mike Flanagan are currently working on an adaptation of Carrie. Edgar Wright is working with star Glen Powell on a new edition of The Running Man, and projects for It sequel Welcome to Derry, The Institute, and The Long Walk are also underway.

New adaptation of Stephen King's Cujo coming to Netflix

But for Netflix subscribers, things are going to be great, too. The streamer will be turning King's 1981 novel, Cujo, into a film as well. There was a movie previously made of the work, but that came out in 1983. In other words, it was time for a new project of the book.

The story revolves around a mother and son stuck in a car that will not start on a very hot day. The issue is much further complicated by a Saint Bernard that was once extremely friendly but has been bitten by a bat, and the dog has gone on a killing spree since. The mother and son have to decide whether to risk likely dying of heat stroke or getting out of the car and facing the wrath of a dog gone mad.

King has always had a way of creating a simple story and giving the reader or viewer a feeling of being trapped in what is happening in the plot. That only heightens the horror, of course.

There is no timeline for when Cujo will be coming to Netflix, as the project is still in pre-production. Roy Lee will produce, but no writers or cast have yet to be attached. In all likelihood, King fans are probably looking at 2026 (at the earliest) for the release of the new film.
