Mike Flanagan is officially the father of Netflix horror TV. No creator has been nearly as successful as Flanagan at creating horror shows for Netflix. With five of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix shows available to stream, we ranked the five projects from worst to best, just in time for Halloween.

The Fall of the House of Usher, the newest of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix shows, premiered on Netflix on Oct. 12, 2023. The series is one of the most popular Netflix shows of the fall of 2023. Unfortunately, it will be the last of Flanagan’s Netflix shows for a while at least. Flanagan’s output deal with Netflix expired, and he inked a TV deal with Amazon Studios. Hopefully, Flanagan and Netflix will work together in the future. For now, we have five great Netflix shows to watch every October!

Here is the list of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix shows:

  • The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
  • The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
  • Midnight Mass (2021)
  • The Midnight Club (2022)
  • The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)

There are a few characteristics of a Flanagan Netflix show that need to be mentioned. First of all, our of the five shows are anthology series. The shows feature the same cast members in different roles. Kate Siegel, who is married to Flanagan, Carla Gugino, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Zach Gilford, Oliver Jackson Cohen, Victoria Pedretti, and others play roles in several of the Netflix shows. Flanagan’s shows typically have an emphasis on gothic horror and religious themes. To me, the shows more emotionally distressing than scary, but they do have their moments.

Let’s start with the worst of Flanagan’s Netflix shows, The Midnight Club.

5. The Midnight Club

The Midnight Club is based on the book of the same name by Christopher Pike. The series tells the story of a group of terminally ill teens living at Brightcliffe Home Hospice. Every night, they meet at midnight in the library to tell stories. One of the teens begins a journey to find out how to stop her terminal illness.

Overall, The Midnight Club is the worst of Flanagan’s Netflix shows. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s definitely the most different of the bunch. It features incredible performances from a talented young cast, and that was easily the best part of the series for me.

The pacing, which is always a subject of debate with Flanagan’s Netflix shows, was just off in The Midnight Club. The story didn’t need 10 episodes. Eight episodes would have been much better, although it could have been six episodes, too. Had they cut some of the side stories about these teens and focused more on the main story and finding the cure, it would have been more interesting.

The Midnight Club was canceled after one season on Netflix. It was the only one of Flanagan’s shows that was planned to continue after one season.
