How boring would Netflix be if they did not have as many foreign language films and series as the streamer does? This allows viewers to choose a global talent pool, and not just what we have in the United States, Australia, and the UK. The highly entertaining number of programs is vast.
Of the current Netflix top 10 list as far as series are concerned, a good many are foreign languages. The trick is to watch the shows in their original languages and go with English subtitles if English is your first language. The actors' real inflections make the viewing experience better.
But which shows among the current top 10 are binge-worthy? The five below definitely are. Some you can stream all in one day.
Five binge-worthy series among Netflix's current top 10 list
Prison Cell 211
First, let's just say the acting in this series is ridiculously good. The material isn't always on the same level, but the actors do elevate it because of the nuances they bring to the characters. Are there a lot of bad words and violence? Yep.
But what else to expect from a series that follows a human rights attorney who is caught up in a prison riot and has to take on a new identity to stay alive? You will want to keep pushing through the episodes until you are done.
The Night Agent
Is season two as good as season one? Likely not. Season one was a surprise hit and shockingly good. Did everything always make sense with Peter Sutherland and Rose Larkin? No, there were stretches of disbelief, but that made the tension even better.
In season two, Sutherland is a real agent and is immediately on the run in Thailand. The series is a bit slower-paced in its second year, and there are certainly no redefining thriller motifs, but that is fine. If you loved the first season, you will like the second one, too.
Sweet Magnolias
The latest season (number four, if you are keeping track) is not quite as good as the first two seasons, but the show set a high mark in those early years. This is still a feel-good show with a lot of drama. There might be one too many soapy storylines, but that only makes other parts of the show better somehow.
There are a number of plot twists in season four (no spoilers here!), but the series still seems too slow. Why is this show worth watching? Because you will love the first two seasons and find yourself just keep watching.
The Åre Murders
There are certain nations turning out consistent high-quality programming on Netflix. One is Korea, with series like Squid Game. Another is Sweden with a decent number of Nordic Noir films and shows. In this series, a police officer from Stockholm is on vacation in a ski town in the north of Sweden and gets caught up in the disappearance of a teen.
Everyone is a suspect, and the show keeps you guessing about who is truly worthy of being one and who isn't. That's the trick the Swedes have figured out extremely well. Just when you expect a zig, the series doesn't just zag but goes in a completely different direction than you expected.
Cassandra
AI is a thing now, but in this show, it's been around for a bit as a new family moves into the oldest smart home in Germany. The issue is that the household helper wakes up and makes their lives not fun. Early on, you might even be talking to the TV and asking the characters to not do some of the things they are doing.
You will be drawn into this sci-fi thriller from the get-go. There is just enough dark humor to keep you from being too creeped out. Just keep hitting that play next episode now button.
