Running Point star's Academy Award-nominated movie heads to Netflix in June

It's no secret that Running Point has become one of the most popular Netflix shows right now. The original basketball comedy series comes from Mindy Kaling and stars Kate Hudson proved its place as one of the streamer's leading hits after the release of the second season. Thankfully, the series will be back for season 3, but one of its stars will be back on the streamer even sooner.

Kate Hudson might be best known for some of her most era-defining romantic comedies such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bride Wars, Something Borrowed, and Fool's Gold, but the actress has also created an iconic characters, like Penny Lane in her Academy Award-nominated performance in Almost Famous. However, Hudson's second Oscar-nominated movie is heading to Netflix.

Song Sung Blue coming to Netflix in June 2026

Last year, Kate Hudson starred alongside Hugh Jackman in Song Song Blue, a musical drama film based on the lives and careers of Mike and Claire Sardina. The couple performed in the band Lightning & Thunder, a a tribute to Neil Diamond's music. Hudson's performance in the film earned the star her second career Oscar nomination, her first since being nominated back in 2001.

After making its theatrical debut on Christmas 2025 and landing on Peacock in February 2026, Song Sung Blue will begin streaming on Netflix in the United States on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The film follows fellow Oscar-nominated Focus Features film Bugonia, which was also released last year and made its way to Netflix this spring. It's a great time to catch up on movies you might have missed!

Song Sung Blue comes from writer and director Craig Brewer and is based on the 2008 documentary film of the same name by Greg Kohs. In addition to Hudson and Jackman's star power in the leading roles, the movie's cast also includes Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, and others in supporting roles.

Upon release, Song Sung Blue earned mostly positive reception from critics and still holds a certified fresh rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, the movie performed well at the box office, making $58 million against its $30 million budget, but more so than its acclaim or moderation commercial success, Hudson's performance was the movie's real selling point and revelation.

We all know how talented Kate Hudson is and has been for her entire career. We have watched her elevate rom-coms that would have been forgettable without anyone else stepping into her roles and command even the most insignificant guest appearances in shows like Glee. But with Running Point and Song Sung Blue, she has reached a completely new height in her acting career.

If you love Hudson in the Netflix original comedy series, then you definitely have to watch her latest movie if you managed to miss it in theaters or on Peacock. There's a reason she earned an Academy Award nomination and its not just because of her singing voice or her Midwestern accent.
