Ransom Canyon season 2 did the 1 thing the showrunner promised fans wouldn't happen

The waiting for Ransom Canyon season 2 has ended as the new episodes dropped on Netflix on July 23. In the new season, Quinn returns from her half-year stay in New York City to find her hometown worse for the wear and Staten still not-so-secretly pining away. But she's not the only one in the midst of a sticky romantic situation. Lucas' love troubles double in season 2.

Ransom Canyon introduced Lucas and Lauren as something of the town's Romeo and Juliet, as Lucas was the troubled boy from the "wrong side of the tracks" and Lauren was the privileged popular girl. Their secret relationship became real, but during the tornado episode, Lauren found herself in close quarters with Lucas' older brother Kit, and sparks began flying.

Last season, showrunner April Blair spoke directly to the fan interest in Lauren and Kit's connection as viewers quickly began shipping the characters together, with stars Garrett Wareing and Lizzy Greene even sending her messages from fans. However, she shot down the concept of Lauren and Kit getting into a full-fledged love triangle or relationship in season 2, which is exactly what happened.

Lauren and Kit get together in Ransom Canyon season 2

From the very first episode of Ransom Canyon season 2, Lauren and Kit are trying their best to deny their feelings for each other, but as they keep ending up in each other's orbit, it's harder to avoid their connection. By episode 5, the act on their feelings and kiss, which Lucas happens to witness, thus kicking off an official love triangle between Lauren and the Russell brothers.

Rewind to May 2025 when Blair said the following to Woman's World magazine: "I think that there’s something there that we want to explore, and not necessarily like some full-blown romance or love triangle, but the complications of that connection and the kind of information he can give her about her mother, who she’s really looked at as someone who blew up their family."

Obviously, something must have changed in the writing process with either the writers deciding to actually throw a love triangle together for the fans who were shipping Lauren and Kit or Netflix giving the directive to instigate the love triangle. But based on what fans were told last year, we assumed that Lauren and Kit weren't on the table for romance.

Almost the complete opposite of what Blair tease for Lauren and Kit's relationship happened in Ransom Canyon season 2. While Kit kind of did help Lauren work through her issues with her mother, that ended up being a blip in the grand scheme of their storyline. There's maybe one small reference to Kit's relationship with her mother, and the pair don't consciously unpack the past.

Ransom Canyon ruined the dynamic between Lauren and Lucas

In the process of writing toward Lauren and Kit's chemistry, Ransom Canyon completely dismantled the relationship between Lauren and Lucas to the point where some viewers might not even want to see them ever get back together. In some regards, it's even unimaginable that they would even want to be friends or friendly after how they have hurt each other.

Not only did Lauren cheat on Lucas with his older brother, but Lucas also cheated on Lauren with her best friend, Ashley, in response to catching Lauren and Kit kissing. Both betrayals are seemingly insurmountable and cut to the bone. But it doesn't stop Lauren from wanting to be with Kit, who's sent off to a ranch in Wyoming to escape thanks to a gruff warning from Lauren's dad.

The love triangle storyline wraps up in season 2 with Lauren and Lucas seemingly finding forgiveness for each other and admitting that there's still love between them, whatever that might look like. They tearfully clear the air before Lucas gives Lauren a tip on where to find Kit before he leaves town. Lauren finds him in time, and she kisses him and successfully prevents him from leaving.

Sure, the scene is romantic and lovely and everything you want when it comes to grand romance onscreen. But it's a difficult relationship to root for all things considered. Maybe it's personal preference, but love triangles between brothers have become too common and have lost their luster. The Summer I Turned Pretty, Every Year After, and My Life with the Walter Boys have it covered.

Ransom Canyon had an opportunity to divert the trope rather than falling into the same tired trap, but here we are. As much as we can root for Kit, who's actually a great guy given a rough hand, to find love and a stable career, essentially stealing his little brother's girlfriend is a very odd route for the series to take. And if the series returns for season 3, this story still isn't over.
