Part of the tragedy of Griselda Blanco's story is that three of her four sons were murdered, something addressed in the new Netflix Original series Griselda starring Sofia Vergara in the titular role.
Griselda had three sons, Uber, Dixon, and Osvaldo ("Ozzy" for short), with her first husband Carlos Trujillo. Later, she and her third husband Darío Sepúlveda had a fourth son together, Michael Corleone. When Darío left Griselda, he kidnapped Michael and took him with her, leading Griselda to hire a hitman to assassinate her ex and bring Michael back to the United States.
In the Netflix series, this plays out pretty accurately, with Darío growing tired of Griselda's growing desire for more power and control, he takes Michael and leaves Miami. Darío (SPOILERS) is then murdered in the finale by a mysterious assailant who takes Michael with him. The show doesn't go into detail about what happened, but it's similar to the reported true story, as previously reported by the Miami New Times.
Tragically, Griselda's eldest sons, Uber, Ozzy, and Dixon, all died, though the details of their deaths are unknown. In the show, each one is murdered, implied to be victims of Griselda's enemies. Michael is her only surviving heir, though his life has been far from easy. He became a target and according to Hello! Magazine, survived seven assassination attempts while growing up. He lives in Miami with his family, including three children of his own.
Michael Corleone has filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Sofia Vergara over Griselda
As Griselda's only living son, Michael has taken it upon himself to rehabilitate his mother's image of the years. He even runs a website called My Mother, The Godmother, where he reveals the "true story" of his life and has written a book with the same name that you can purchase from the site.
According to court documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight, Michael has been giving interviews and providing anecdotes on his life through interviews and his book over the years and Netflix used some of his material without compensation.
"The lawsuit contends that Netflix essentially appropriated the family's story and incorporated it into the show, violating the Blanco children's rights by using their images and likenesses without permission," notes the outlet.
Even though the series was created by Netflix, Sofia Vergara does serve as an executive producer, which is likely why she was named in the lawsuit.
Furthermore, in the initial report from TMZ, it's stated that Michael was pitched an idea by Netflix in 2016, but they didn't want to use his interviews or books. There were some discussions with a producer, but it sounds like it never went anywhere.
Now here we are in 2024 and Michael claims the show does use a lot of his content, but he never got paid for any of it. He and his family's goal with the lawsuit was to stop the release of the series, but clearly that didn't happen as it's out now on Netflix. So far, the streamer has not commented publicly on the controversy.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Michael reportedly hasn't liked how the media has depicted his mother on-screen, and even became depressed after seeing the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys, which discussed Blanco's reported influence on the Miami drug trade in the 1970s and 1980s.
After the documentary's debut, he went on a Spanish talk show to defend his mom, saying, "My little old lady is someone who loves people. She has dedicated herself to God. She is a Christian. She lived through hell.”
Griselda was assassinated on September 3, 2012 while exiting a butcher shop in Medellín. The culprit was never identified.
