Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Netflix offers seven of the nine films in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is unique as a standalone film about a demonic force using Freddy Krueger as a portal to the real world. This film gives the franchise a new, unexpected layer that questions the effects creating horror has on its creators and cast. Actress Heath Langencamp returns to the franchise, this time portraying herself, as does Robert Englund, who portrays himself and Freddy.
Silent Hill (2006)
Based on the same-titled horror/action video game, Silent Hill is a supernatural horror directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avary. The film stars Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen, Alice Krige, and Jodelle Ferland. A desperate mother, Rose (Mitchell), takes her ailing daughter to the ghost town of Silent Hill in an attempt to cure her. After crashing their car, Rose discovers her daughter is missing. This leads her to search for her daughter in the twisted reality of the town inhabited by residents who are stuck in permanent purgatory and grotesque creatures who pursue her. As Rose searches, she begins to uncover the horrific events that led to the town being burned down 30 years earlier. Hurry to watch this one, as it will be removed from the Netflix catalog on May 31.
X (2022)
The A24 slasher film X, which is considered a modern classic, is directed by Ti West and stars Mia Goth in dual roles, one as a young girl, Maxine, and the second as an elderly woman, Pearl. The film is set in the 1970s and follows a cast a crew of porno films who arrange to film on the farm of an elder couple in rural Texas. They quickly learn that the couple may be elderly but are a significant threat to their lives. The movie also stars Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi.
Alone (2020)
John Hyams directed the psychological thriller Alone, a remake of Mattias Olsson's Swedish film Gone. The film stars Jules Willcox as Jessica, a recently widowed woman traveling alone. She is then stalked through an unfamiliar wilderness by a deranged psychopath, Sam (Manchaca). The minimalistic survival story heightens the suspense, creating a tremendous cat-and-mouse tale.
