Tyler Perry's next Netflix movie Straw sets cast with trio of iconic stars
Well-known filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has set his next movie at Netflix, and it's called Straw. Read more about this upcoming film below.
Straw falls under Perry's creative partnership with Netflix that he signed back in October 2023. Through this multi-year first-look deal, Perry writes, directs, and produces feature films for the streamer. His most recent movie to come out of the deal was the legal thriller Mea Culpa, which starred Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes. One of his upcoming films with Netflix is the war drama Six Triple Eight, which stars Kerry Washington. He also has an upcoming drama series titled Beauty in Black in the works at Netflix.
Now, we've just learned of his next Netflix movie, Straw, which is being described as a "tense drama." Perry will be writing, directing, and producing the film. Angi Bones and Tony Strickland have also signed on as producers.
The story follows a single mother on an extremely unpleasant journey. We shared the official logline via Netflix below.
"A single mother faces a series of unfortunate events that lead her down an unexpected path. Struggling against circumstances beyond her control, she becomes entangled in a situation she never imagined. Fueled by desperation, she finds herself at the center of suspicion in a world that seems indifferent to her existence."
Golden Globe Award-winning actress Taraji P. Henson leads the cast. While her role is currently undisclosed, she is believed to play the single mother. You might recognize Henson from her roles in the movies Hustle & Flow, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hidden Figures, Think Like a Man, Acrimony and The Color Purple. She also starred as Cookie Lyon in the Fox drama series Empire and as Joss Carter in the CBS crime drama series Person of Interest.
Joining her in the cast are Sherri Shepherd (Precious, 30 Rock), Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One, The Book of Clarence), Glynn Turman (Black Cake, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Sinbad (Rel, A Different World), Rockmond Dunbar (Prison Break, 9-1-1), Mike Merrill (The Black Hamptons), and Ashley Versher (Beauty in Black, #LoveMyRoomie). All of their roles are undisclosed at the moment as well.
According to What's on Netflix, production is currently underway at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Filming is rumored to take place from May 28 to June 28, 2024.
