There likely won't be another season of Ripley (but there is more story to tell)

Patricia Highsmith wrote multiple novels about Tom Ripley that could flesh out additional seasons.

Based on Patricia Highsmith's classic novel series revolving around the con artist Tom Ripley, Netflix's new thriller series aptly titled Ripley stars Andrew Scott in the titular role.

With eight episodes to watch that follow the sociopathic career criminal among his many exploits through Rome, fans might be curious if there are more episodes on the way, especially since Netflix often splits shows into separate volumes.

Sadly, that's not the case with Ripley. What you see is what you get. There are only eight episodes in the show and it's very unlikely that a second season will get made. Ripley is based on the first novel in Highsmith's series, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and it adapts the entire thing.

Spoilers ahead for the end of Ripley

The show ends at the same place as the book, with Tom Ripley getting away with all of his crimes and escaping, now armed with a brand-new fake identity. He might be left feeling paranoid that a cunning invesigator will catch up to him, but for now, the world is his oyster.

But Netflix has billed Ripley as a "limited series," meaning the streamer isn't intending to make more. That said, never say never. There have been a few times Netflix ended up turning a limited series into a show, like renewing The Watcher and potentially even Beef for additional seasons.

There is more story to tell in Patricia Highsmith's novels

Another possibility is that if the show does perform really well for Netflix, the streamer could opt to order a spinoff of some sort. Highsmith wrote five books starring Tom Ripley, so there are plenty of different directions to take the series if Netflix wants to continue with Scott's rendition of the character.

The second book in the series, Ripley Under Ground, takes place six years after Ripley murdered Dickie, with the con artist now happily married to a pharmaceutical heiress and living in a beautiful French villa when someone starts snooping around an old art forgery scheme and threatens to unravel Ripley's entire new life.

Would you like to see Ripley continue on Netflix? All eight episodes of the series are now streaming.
