By Reed Gaudens
It's The Night Agent's world, and we're just living in it! Gabriel Basso, the star of Netflix's breakout hit action-drama series has landed another big role on the streaming service, and this time, he's working with an Academy Award-winning director.
Kathryn Bigelow, who won two Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for The Hurt Locker, set her next project at Netflix, which will center on White House officials navigating in real time the imminent threat of a missile attack on the United States. Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson are set as the film's leads, and Deadline reported that Basso and Jared Harris have been added to the cast.
Beyond these four casting announcements, Netflix hasn't provided additional details about the movie, including a title or production timeline, but it's exciting nonetheless. The streamer first announced that Bigelow's next movie, her first since the 2017 film Detroit, would be moving ahead at their upfront presentation in May along with other new content announcements.
Gabriel Basso sets new Netflix role ahead of The Night Agent season 2
Of course, the announcement of Basso's new movie role on Netflix comes ahead of his work on The Night Agent season 2 wrapping up in June. Following the resolution of the dual strikes last year, Netflix fast-tracked work on the sophomore season of the massively successful series, which still eyes a release date later this year. Netflix has confirmed season 2 will be released in 2024.
The second season will find Peter taking on his first mission as an official Night Agent and adds new cast members, including Amanda Warren, Brittany Snow, Michael Malarkey, Teddy Sears, Rob Heaps, and more. Luciane Buchanan returns as Peter's girlfriend Rose Larkin, though it remains to be scene how she will fit into this mission, as Rose played a key role in the first season's story.
Aside from The Night Agent season 2 and Bigelow's forthcoming directorial effort, Basso also stars alongside Jessica Alba in Netflix's action thriller film Trigger Warning. He was also recently seen in a supporting role in the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1 and will next be seen in Clint Eastwood's upcoming thriller movie Juror No. 2, which stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, Kiefer Sutherland, and more.
One thing's clear: If you have an action or thriller movie planned, you know to call Gabriel Basso for a role. After the immense win The Night Agent provided for Netflix, it's amazing to see that not only is he taking on more roles with the streamer, but he's also branching out with other impressive roles. Although he's been acting since he was a kid, Basso's by far one of the most talented and deserving rising stars right now. We can't wait to see him in action in season 2, Bigelow's movie, and beyond.
