It seems court won’t be back in session this year after all. The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 will not be coming to Netflix in 2024, with the hit series based on Michael Connelly’s book series being delayed until 2025. That’s right, we’re going to have to wait over a year to see Mickey Kaller back on the job and to find out what exactly happened to Glory Days.
When Netflix renewed The Lincoln Lawyer in August 2023, the streaming service noticeably did not promote the third season as coming in 2024. However, there was an assumption among audiences that the new season would be released sometime this year given the fact that Netflix was able to release season 2 without a long break.
Sadly, Deadline reports The Lincoln Lawyer is among a long list of Netflix originals that will not be releasing new seasons in 2024 and will instead help lead the 2025 programming slate.
What’s interesting is that there has been no reason provided to explain why The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 will not be coming in 2024, with no explanation provided for the delay. Still, it seems safe to assume the delay might be a result of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes which halted production on many hit shows including The Lincoln Lawyer.
The decision to hold the third season for 2025 is interesting given it's been reported production on the season began in January which would suggest the season should be ready to go in the final quarter of 2024. Instead of releasing the season at the end of the year though, it appears Netflix feels there is more value in making fans wait until 2025.
While this might be helpful to Netflix from a business standpoint, it's certainly disappointing as a fan of the show. Sure we're used to waiting years between seasons of some Netflix shows, but The Lincoln Lawyer felt like it was the type of show Netflix could actually release a new season of every year which is something Netflix needs more of.
Not every show needs to be movie-quality. It's okay to lean into tried and true genre shows such as The Lincoln Lawyer which should be cheaper and easier to produce so that you can bring fans new seasons in shorter windows of time. Instead of dragging the wait time between seasons out, maybe Netflix should consider finding ways to actually bring fans new episodes of the shows they love on a more regular basis to make our pricey subscriptions worthwhile.
