The wait's almost over for Michelle Buteau and her hilarious show's return on Netflix! After being renewed for a second season earlier this year, Survival of the Thickest has officially started production on season 2 in New York City. Buteau and Netflix announced that cameras started rolling with a post on Instagram on July 15.
Survival of the Thickest, which is based on the Nailed It! host's book of the same name, first premiered on Netflix back in July 2033. The delay in the show's renewal likely had something to do with both the writer's and actor's strikes that brought the entertainment industry to a standstill for many months in 2023. But season 2's back in action almost one year to the day of season 1's premiere!
In the announcement video for the start of season 2's production, Buteau and her co-stars Tasha Smith and Tone Bell share their excitement for the fans to see what they're working on for the upcoming episodes. Buteau leaves us with something of a challenge: "You're gonna want to watch it more than once, more than twice, more than thrice!" Challenge accepted, Michelle!
Survival of the Thickest season 2 guest stars announced!
In addition to the show returning to production in New York, Netflix also announced the official cast for the second season, which includes Tasha Smith receiving a promotion to a main cast member and directing two of the episodes. Tone Bell, Liza Treyger, Peppermint, and Marouane Zotti are back for season 2. Allan K. Washington and Anthony Michael Lopez return as guest stars and are joined by a long list of new guest stars, some of whom you will definitely recognize!
Anderson .Paak, Jonathan Chad Higginbotham, Deon Cole, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jerrie Johnson, Celisse, Rolonda Watts, Michael Rishawn, Tika Sumpter, Monét x Change, and RonReaco Lee will also be on hand throughout season 2 for guest appearances, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled to spot them in the show!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter amid the beginning of season 2's production, Buteau described the follow-up season as one where the characters are "taking chances" and "putting themselves out there," but she also teased that season 2 will be sexy. If you missed out on the series the first time around, you are definitely going to want to catch up before the second season makes its debut.
The first season filmed between September and November 2022, about two months of filming for an eight-episode season, which later released in July 2023. If Netflix follows the same timeframe for season 2, filming could wrap in September and the episodes could land on Netflix sometime in early 2025, perhaps as early as in March or later on in May.
