Sofia Vergara and Griselda creator pitching new Miami-set series to Netflix

Although we would absolutely love to see a Griselda season 2, it's just not going to happen, seeing as though the hit crime drama series was billed as a limited series. Also, the first season tells drug queenpin Griselda Blanco's complete life story, so a second season wouldn't be necessary. However, that doesn't mean we've seen the last of Sofia Vergara and the Griselda creative team.

In an August 2024 interview with Variety, Vergara and Griselda co-creator Eric Newman discussed, among other things, the crime drama's success at Netflix, working together, and future potential projects.

When Griselda premiered on Netflix back in January 2024, there was no sure way of knowing whether the show would be a hit. However, we had an inkling it would go straight to the top since Vergara was starring, and the team behind the smash-hit crime drama Narcos was in charge of it.

Ultimately, the limited series received mostly positive reviews from critics, with many praising Vergara's outstanding performance. In fact, the show debuted at No.1 in 90 countries during its debut week and spent six straight weeks in Netflix’s Top 10. As of Aug. 15, Griselda currently holds an 87% Tomatometer score and a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

For her amazing portrayal of Griselda Blanco, Vergara received an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series, making history as the first Latina to be nominated in this category. We'll find out if she takes the award home when the 76th Emmy Awards airs on Sept. 15. But what's next for her? Will she, Newman, and the rest of the Griselda team ever work together again? It appears so.

According to Newman, he and Vergara will be pitching a new show to Netflix. He didn't share much information about the series with Variety, but what he did share definitely made us excited about its potential pickup.

"It’s about a strong, funny, vulnerable woman in the center of a lot of sh*t. I'll also say that it takes place in Miami."

Based on these small plot details, it seems that the show could be of the comedy-drama genre. Newman didn't state if Vergara would star in it, but we could easily see her playing this type of character. Hopefully, Netflix will end up liking their pitch and give their project a series order.
