After being confirmed for release in the second half of 2024, Netflix has officially set a release date for the Formula 1 limited series Senna. On July 18, the streaming service announced that the series will begin streaming on Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving. That's a major release window for the streamer, and it's a big display of faith in Senna.
The limited series slides into the release date previously held by Cobra Kai season 6 part 2, which was previously scheduled to release on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, before moving up two weeks to Friday, Nov. 15. The earlier drop for Cobra Kai gives the veteran series time to shine and the newbie limited series a marquee release date over the holiday weekend.
Curiously, these two release dates seem to suggest that Netflix could be moving back into releasing series on Fridays. In the past couple years, the streamer has released its original series on Thursdays, and in some rare cases on Wednesdays. Perhaps the Thursday experiment has come to a conclusion, and Cobra Kai and Senna are the first two to kick it back to Fridays this fall.
Along with the release date announcement, Netflix also unveiled the official key art for Senna. On the poster, series star Gabriel Leone is front and center, walking toward the viewer on the racetrack with the setting sun behind him. He's suited up as Ayrton Senna, the iconic driver's signature green and yellow helmet in hand. Adding to the powerful key art, on either side of Senna, the effect of racing cars speeding past him gives the viewer an unsettling sense of the world passing him by.
The limited series contains six episodes and tracks the ups and downs of Ayrton Senna's professional and personal life in a scripted series for the first time, per Netflix's press release. While also a bit fictionalized, the series stars Leone as the championship racing driver from Brazil who tragically lost his life at the age of 34 in 1994 following an accident while racing in a competition.
As mentioned above, if you need a bit of levity after watching the inspirational limited series, the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai releases its second of three parts two weeks ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Netflix has yet to finish fleshing out its fall slate, which will surely include even more original series and movies released throughout October, November, and even into December. No doubt, Senna will be one of the most popular Netflix shows to debut this fall!
