The show everyone has been talking about during the summer of 2024 isn't on Netflix. Well, there's obviously a few shows on Netflix that everyone has been talking about, like Bridgerton and Your Honor. But the captivating murder mystery legal drama Presumed Innocent starring Academy Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal stole the spotlight up to its shocking finale.
Presumed Innocent first made its premiere on Apple TV+ on June 12 with the limited series' first two episodes. The eight-episode season came to a close on July 24 with the reveal of who killed Carolyn. According to Deadline, the series has quickly become the most-watched drama series on Apple TV+, leading the streamer to renew Presumed Innocent for season 2, which could make it an anthology.
Based on the Scott Turow book of the same name from 1987, which spawned a 1990 film adaptation also called Presumed Innocent starring Harrison Ford in Gyllenhaal's role, the show follows the twists and turns of a murder investigation. The series centers on prosecutor Rusty Sabich as he's accused of the murder of a woman he both worked with and was intimate with. The series takes viewers on a complicated ride full of potential suspects.
Here's the official synopsis via Apple TV+ Press:
"Presumed Innocent is an eight-episode limited series starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, hailing from David E. Kelley and executive producer J.J. Abrams and is based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow. Starring Gyllenhaal in the lead role of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, the series takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together."
In the trailer for the series, Gyllenhaal's character repeats "I didn't kill her" over and over again, to an extent that it nearly drives you mad and forces you to want to know the truth. Did he kill Carolyn? If not, who else could have done it? If you're hoping to see these questions answered, or if you wondering if you should join the world in watching the series, check out the trailer below!
How to watch Presumed Innocent
As mentioned above, Presumed Innocent isn't available to watch on Netflix as the legal thriller is only available to watch on Apple TV+ as an exclusive on the platform. In order to watch the show and the streamer's other buzzy content, including Palm Royale and Severance among many others, you will need to have a subscription to the service.
Apple TV+ plus offers a few ways to score a free trial. If you purchase a new Apple device, you will have a free three-month trial of the streamer. You can also receive one month free if you choose the Apple One bundle option, but the typical bundle prices range from $19.95 per month to $37.95 per month depending on the plan you choose. Otherwise, a normal monthly subscription to Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month and comes with a free one-week trial for new subscribers.
Even though Netflix has been striking up deals with seemingly rival studios and streamers to house acquired content, don't hold your breath waiting for Netflix to score any Apple TV+ original series anytime soon. It could happen in the distant future or it could also never happen. If you want to watch Presumed Innocent, I would suggest springing for a subscription to check it out. But for those not making the leap yet, similar shows on Netflix include The Lincoln Lawyer, Clickbait, Your Honor, The Innocent, and more.
