And just like that, the film adaptation of Emily Henry's bestselling novel People We Meet on Vacation has its leading stars.
On Friday, Aug. 2, Netflix made the official announcement that a movie based on Henry's book was in the works and that the leads are now set. The streamer shared a post on social media featuring director Brett Haley offering the role of Poppy Wright to actress Emily Bader. The film's leading man Tom Blyth, who will play the film's Alex Nilsen, also joined the celebratory video.
Watch Bader's emotional excitement in the video below!
In People We Meet on Vacation, Poppy and Alex are total opposites but have been best friends for many years. Poppy's a free spirit, while Alex prefers some structure. The pair live in different cities but commit to spending a summer vacation together each year. During one fateful summer, Poppy and Alex begin to wonder whether there could be something more to their steady friendship.
Henry first published the hit book back in May 2021. The author's adult fiction novels, all released in the 2020s, have become massively successful, thanks in part to TikTok's book community. A number of film and series adaptations of Henry's books have began popping up, including a Netflix series adaptation of Happy Place from producer Jennifer Lopez. Beach Read, Book Lovers, and Funny Story are all also in the works to hit the screen.
Bader broke out in the leading role of the 2021 horror film Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. She also appeared in five episodes of The CW's Charmed reboot, had a leading role in the film Fresh Kills, and stars in the fan-favorite Prime Video series My Lady Jane.
Likewise, Blyth broke out as Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The British actor also stars in the MGM+ series Billy the Kid and has a number of film roles lined up, including A Farewell to Arms, Plainclothes, and Watch Dogs.
Haley has experience directing two Netflix movies, the 2020 titles All the Bright Places and All Together Now. He also helmed an episode of Hulu's series adaptation of the beloved John Green novel Looking for Alaska. Yulin Kuang will write the script for the People We Meet on Vacation movie, which is being produced in a partnership with Sony.
As Deadline notes, People We Meet on Vacation will be the first Emily Henry adaptation to begin production. The movie will likely begin filming in September 2024 and wrap by the end of October, paving the way for a release sometime in 2025, possibly even summer, which would be the perfect time to release a fun romantic comedy like this.
