I know there's a lot of you fellow Outlander fans on Netflix, and you've all been waiting for Outlander season 6 oh so patiently! But also impatiently. I definitely can't blame you! This series really is like no other, it's not hard to see why we're all so captivated by it.
The beautiful romance between Claire and Jamie, the time-travel/subtle supernatural aspect, and the different stories each season brings that keeps the show fresh are just some of the reasons we love it. Am I right? That's why I know you're on pins and needles waiting for some news about the arrival of the sixth season on Netflix in the U.S.
Outlander season 6 could be coming in May 2024
The streamer has not officially announced just when the sixth season is coming to Netflix. However, I have a very strong educated guess. We're predicting that Outlander season 6 is coming to Netflix in May 2024. More specifically, potentially May 1, 2024. And here's why.
The first two seasons arrived on the streaming service in May 2019, and the time-travel romance was an immediate success. So much so that Netflix licensed the third season from Starz to begin streaming on the platform just a few months later in December 2019. And since then, Netflix has followed a release date pattern.
Netflix adds a new season of Outlander two years after that installment's season finale has aired on its original network, Starz. So for example, Season 3's finale was broadcast on Dec. 10, 2017. The third season was then added to Netflix exactly two years later on Dec. 10, 2019.
And it's gone on like that with seasons 4 and 5 as well. The finale of the fourth chapter of the story was released January 2019, and then it began streaming on Netflix in January 2021. This was followed by season 5 airing its last episode in May 2020. Outlander season 5 arrived in May 2022 on Netflix.
And so, that's why we have high hopes that Outlander season 6 will premiere on or around May 1, 2024. That's because the sixth season's finale aired on Starz May 1, 2022. For an in-depth breakdown and a look at this pattern, check out the table below!
Season | Finale date on Starz | Release date on Netflix |
---|---|---|
1 | May 30, 2015 | May 27, 2019 |
2 | July 9, 2016 | May 27, 2019 |
3 | Dec. 10, 2017 | Dec. 10, 2019 |
4 | Jan. 27, 2019 | Jan. 26, 2021 |
5 | May 10, 2020 | May 10, 2022 |
6 | May 1, 2022 | * Predicted date: May 1, 2024 |
This would certainly be amazing news for us fans, and I truly hope we're right in our predictions! A two year wait is a super long time to see new episdoes of the show. But, I can tell you that even over on Starz there's a big gap between seasons. Not two years. But many times at least a year, sometimes a bit more. Plus you Netflix viewers, I'm sure you're also used to it as well. Just look at Stranger Things, Outer Banks, and so many other Netflix Originals. Trust me, the wait is going to be worth it!
The reason Netflix has to wait two years between seasons is probably because of the licensing deal it has with Starz. And it makes sense. Outlander is a big and popular show, and its network is going to want to keep it exclusive to itself and capitalize on that for a while. Hardcore fans like myself will go ahead and tune in each week, but others may take their time watching a season. These episodes are long! And so I understand why Starz holds onto a new season of the series for a while. On the other hand, it's smart in sharing its content with Netflix to get more viewers!
What's coming up next for the Frasers?
Don't worry, I won't be spoiling anything for you all. But here's an idea of what you can expect in Outlander season 6 when it potentially, arrives in May 2024. The sixth season of the historical drama is based on the sixth book in author Diana Gabaldon's novel series, titled A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
The eight-episode season sees Jamie and Claire face challenges not just outside of the Ridge, but internally as well. I'll give you a hint and tell you that the new Christie family that arrives are trouble. But, I can definitely say that I'd never bet against the Frasers! Here's the official synopsis of the season from Sony (the show's production company):
"In the sixth season of Outlander, the Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a colonial society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution. Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge. They must now defend this home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care."

This season is shorter than previous ones because it was filmed during the pandemic when productions were given the green light to start back up again. Even though projects were allowed to go back to work, this still presented challenges for the crew and cast. Plus, our beloved Claire Fraser actress Caitríona Balfe was pregnant, and so the season had to be shortened. I can tell you though that this takes nothing away from the story. It's action-packed, fast-paced, and will keep you on your toes. Get ready!
