Netflix just dropped some incredible news for One Piece fans! On July 1, Netflix confirmed via a new video that the cast and crew have started filming One Piece season 2 in Capetown, South Africa.
Netflix also confirmed some of the cast for One Piece season 2, via press release shared with our team at Netflix Life.
Rumors had been swirling for months about One Piece season 2 starting production soon in South Africa. This is the first time that Netflix officially confirmed the start of production on season 2!
In the video, Netflix documented the journeys of stars Iñaki Godoy, who plays Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu, who plays Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd, who plays Nami, Jacob Romero, who plays Usopp, and Taz Skylar, who plays Sanji, returning to South Africa from Mexico City, Tokyo, Los Angeles (x 2), and Las Vegas. The five main stars of the show reunite on set in South Africa.
Netflix didn't announce how long the cast would be in South Africa to film season 2. Production listings indicate production started in June 2024, which Netflix just confirmed, and it will last through the end of the year.
There have also been rumors that Netflix renewed One Piece for season 3 and that the cast and crew will film both seasons back to back. Not to cast doubt on that rumor, because it could be true, but there's almost no way that they would film two seasons of One Piece in six months.
Netflix shares more One Piece season 2 cast
I think we all knew that Godoy, Skylar, Romero, Rudd, and Mackenyu would be back for One Piece season 2. Netflix also confirmed, via press release, that Ilia Isorelys Paulino, who stars as Alvida, Jeff Wardas, who played Buggy, and Michael Dorman, who played Gold Roger, in the first season of One Piece will all be back in some capacity for season 2.
Recently, Netflix announced new cast members for season 2:
- David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3
- Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5
- Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9
- Brendan Sean Murray as Brogy
- Callum Kerr as Smoker
- Clive Russell as Crocus
- Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine
- Julia Rehwald as Tashigi
- Werner Coetser as Dorry
- Rob Colletti as Wapol
- Ty Keogh as Dalton
By my calculation, there are officially 19 confirmed cast members for One Piece season 2. When it's all said and done, just knowing the One Piece chapters and stories that should be covered in season 2, there's a good chance that the number of confirmed cast is A LOT higher by the time the season comes out. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen for a long time.
Netflix noted that there will be more additional cast confirmed later. So, if you don't see your favorites on the list just yet, don't worry! We know there are more cast members on the way, and if fans get their way, it should include some big stars.
I know this goes without saying after sharing the production news, but there's going to be a big gap between One Piece season 1 and season 2. We know that One Piece season 2 isn't coming to Netflix until 2025. That's obvious. If production wraps in December or even gets pushed into 2025, we could be waiting until the fall of 2025 before we see One Piece season 2. For a show like this with a lot of special effects, CGI, and post-production work, it'll need at least six to eight months before it's on Netflix.
We'll share more updates about One Piece season 2 as we learn them! TO THE GRAND LINE!
