After the series finale of the super-successful Spanish teen drama series Elite, the creators of the veteran Netflix original have their next show lined up on the streamer. Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona are the executive producers of the new Netflix original medical drama series Breathless, otherwise known by its actual title Respira in Spanish-speaking countries.

Breathless takes place in the emergency room of the Joaquín Sorolla public hospital in Valencia, Spain. Naturally, it's a high-stakes and high-paced atmosphere that has its doctors and residents at odds or, in come cases, in bed. In the eight-episode first season, when the hospital receives a high-profile patient, the glaring issues with the public health system are magnified and result in a strike.

On July 31, one month ahead of the series premiere on Aug. 30, Netflix unveiled the first official and full-length trailer for the series and previewed all of the drama, romance, and medical complications to unfold throughout the season. Take a look at the trailer in the video below and see what's in store from Breathless when it debuts on Netflix in late August!

It's a trailer that will have you immediately hooked and want to check out the full season. The clip does an excellent job at teasing the characters and their anxiety over the pressures of caring for patients, as well as the romantic entanglements that seem to take a racy page from Elite's book. The introduction of the subplot involving the bureaucratic frustration over public health and the added stress for medical professionals and their patients looks as dramatically juicy as it does maddeningly realistic.

While plenty of medical drama series have found success on Netflix, most if not all have not originated from the streaming service itself. Breathless will seemingly mark the streamer's first official stab at producing its own original medical drama series, ahead of the forthcoming release of its original American medical procedural Pulse next year.

The most obvious American comparisons to the Spanish series are medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy, The Resident, ER, New Amsterdam, Chicago Med, and other hit broadcast procedurals. Breathless seems to expertly balance the sexier and more salacious aspects of the doctors' personal lives with the hard-hitting personal interest stories revolving around medical cases that tug on your heartstrings.

Breathless stars Najwa Nimri as Patricia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón as Pilar, Blanca Suárez as Jessica, Manu Ríos as Biel, Alfonso Bassave as Lluis, and Borja Luna as Nestor. Ríos previously starred in the fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons of Elite as Patrick Blanco Commerford. The Spanish actor also appeared in the hit Netflix thriller limited series Muted in 2023.

Breathless premieres Friday, Aug. 30 only on Netflix.
