It's going to be a long time until we see One Piece season 2 on Netflix.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, Netflix confirmed the list of new Netflix shows and seasons coming in 2024, most of them anyway. Unfortunately, One Piece season 2 was not on that list. Later, Deadline reported One Piece, along with Stranger Things, Wednesday, and a few other popular Netflix shows were not scheduled to be released in 2024, officially.

This is quite a bit outside of the norm for Netflix. The streaming network doesn't typically announce long lists of new releases like this outside of the TCAs, Geeked Week, or TUDUM. Normally, Netflix will announce the release dates and windows for shows much closer to their dates. They rarely confirm that shows are not returning within a given year, so getting some clarity about what to expect in the future from the streamer is good.

Why One Piece season 2 isn't coming in 2024

One Piece season 2 also looked like it was coming to Netflix in 2025. Obviously, there was hope that the cast and crew would get back to work on the new season in late 2023, but that just wasn't in the cards. This is a series with a lot of moving parts, and it takes a lot of CGI and effects to make this show look as good as it does. It's also a show that Netflix likes to take its time with to make sure they do it right, considering how popular the manga by Eiichiro Oda and anime series are.

Production on season 2 has not started yet, as of February 2024, according to Deadline. And, that's basically the reason why One Piece season 2 is not coming to Netflix this year. There's just too much to do within the year to get this series filmed, edited, promoted, and released on Netflix. Normally, for Netflix shows, production takes anywhere from 4-12 months and then another 4-8 months, minimum, before the seasons are released. For a show like One Piece, it's going to be on the longer end of that.

In September, Variety reported that the scripts for the second season were done. They were waiting for the writers' and actors' strike to end before they could be rolling on season 2. In the report, Becky Clements, the president of Tomorrow Studios, claimed that the show could have been ready for 2024 if they "moved fast," but also said:

"Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air."

I would say 12 months after the strikes ended was always going to be super ambitious for One Piece season 2. It's clear this show is going to take more like 18 months before its new seasons are released on Netflix moving forward.

With that in mind, I would assume One Piece season 2 won't premiere on Netflix until late spring or summer 2025. Emily Rudd, Iñaki Godoy, Taz Skylar, Jacob Romero, Morgan Davies, Mackenyu, and more are expected to return to the cast for season 2 along with a bunch of new characters.

We'll share the release date for the new season as soon as Netflix announces it. We should learn more as production starts again in South Africa sometime in 2024. Stay tuned!
