Cobra Kai fans had grown accustomed to getting new seasons of the Netflix dramedy every year, making the wait for season 6 all the more highly anticipated. Because of a delayed renewal and the writers' and actors' strikes, production on the final season was completed way later than we had been hoping, but finally, we have the start of season 6. I say "the start," because while Cobra Kai has returned, the full season is not quite out just yet.
In recent years, Netflix has begun testing out different release schedules, going so far as to break seasons into multiple parts so fans have to wait weeks or even months to get the rest of the season. They've done it with Stranger Things, with You, with Virgin River, and other big titles. Basically, it seems like they're doing this with all their big hitters. And yes, this is the case with Cobra Kai. The streamer is going a step further with the final season of Cobra Kai, leaning into fan anticipation and splitting it into three parts. The first five episodes of season 6 are now streaming on Netflix, but don't worry because there are definitely more coming.
Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 release date
As mentioned, the first five episodes of Cobra Kai season 6, which make up part 1, have been released on Netflix on Thursday, July 18. The next batch of episodes making up part 2 will be released on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024. And part 3, which Netflix is dubbing "The Finale Event," will be released sometime in 2025. There's no exact release date for part 3 yet.
Netflix has not confirmed how many episodes parts 2 and 3 will include, though "The Finale Event" definitely suggests it will be one finale. It could be a multiple-episode finale, however. What we do know is that season 6 will consist of 15 episodes total, which is more than it's had in previous seasons, so that's exciting. Knowing part 1 is five episodes, we also know we have 10 more to come. Could Netflix split up the season with five episodes per part? It's certainly possible, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.
Though I'm not a fan of the split season releases, I do think the first five episodes of Cobra Kai season 6 set up what's to come very well.
WARNING: Spoilers for Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 are ahead.
Season 6 part 1 recap
Johnny and Daniel have merged dojos in season 6 part 1, but I still wouldn't say Miyagi-Do is thriving. They're training for the upcoming Sekai Taikai, an international karate tournament, while Daniel struggles with a discovery he's made about Mr. Miyagi. Meanwhile, Johnny starts to realize he needs to get his life together with a baby on the way and begins working at Daniel's car dealership. The kids are all figuring out where they want to apply to college, while Tory is happy to hear her mother's health has been improving.
Though there are conflicts along the way, overall, things seem to be looking up for nearly everyone in Cobra Kai season 6 part 1. That is, until tragedy strikes. Sadly, Tory's mom passes away after suffering a fatal pulmonary embolism. Tory isolates herself after her mom's death, understandably, and when she resurfaces at the dojo, she fights very aggressively. As she and Tory are competing for the female captain of the dojo, Amanda gets a phone call from the hospital and she learns what has happened. She and Daniel stop the fight and Tory storms off after she tells everyone her mom is dead.
Miyagi-Do continues on without Tory, naming Sam the female captain and Robby the male captain. Alongside Sam and Robby, Miguel, Devon, Demetri, and Hawk all get to go to Barcelona, Spain, for the Sekai Taikai. Season 6 part 1 ends on a cliffhanger as Miyagi-Do learns of Kreese's escape from prison. And not only has he escaped, but he's trained new students for his dojo and will be competing at the Sekai Taikai, too. Before the credits begin to roll, however, we get another reveal: Tory has joined Kreese and will be competing for Cobra Kai.
It's no doubt a huge discovery for Miyagi-Do, and one that will change everything. We'll likely get to see the outcome of the Sekai Taikai in season 6 part 2 this November. As for The Finale Event, we're expecting to see something even more epic than this tournament. It's the series finale, after all!
You can stream the first five episodes of Cobra Kai season 6 right now on Netflix.
