Get ready, true crime fans. Netflix's follow-up to their highly successful Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is headed to the streamer soon, this time following brothers who were convicted of murdering their parents. Though the first season, which followed the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, was initially believed to be a limited series, Netflix ordered two more seasons in Nov. 2022 due to the show's popularity.
The second installment is titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, telling the story of the siblings who killed their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, on the evening of Aug. 20, 1989 in Beverly Hills, California. The murders, investigation, and eventual trial made national news as the brothers accused their father of sexual abuse, adding another layer to the case while people around the country watched on their TVs.
As announced today, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will premiere on Sept. 19, 2024. Along with the date news, Netflix has shared a quick teaser:
Check out the official synopsis for the next season:
"Following the massive success of DAHMER, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series returns with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, chronicling the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed - and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole - that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?"
The Jeffrey Dahmer Story hit Netflix on Sept. 21, 2022, with a docuseries directed and produced by Joe Berlinger, Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, releasing a few weeks later on Oct. 7, 2022. It'll be interesting to see if Netflix has a documentary or docuseries on the Menedez brothers in the works as well to premiere shortly after Monsters comes out. I'm sure it would be popular.
As previously announced, Cooper Koch (Power Book II: Ghost) will play Erik Menendez (General Hospital), with Nicholas Alexander Chavez portraying Kyle. While Netflix is, smartly so, going with up-and-coming actors for the two leading roles, they've cast Javier Bardem to play José Menendez, and Chloë Sevigny as Kitty Menendez. Though I haven't seen Koch or Chavez in anything before, that's still a pretty impressive cast! I'm excited to see what this ensemble brings to the table.
I'm really curious to see how the future of this anthology series goes from here. The second installment seems to be a bit of a departure from the first, which covered one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. The second season, however, seems to be much more nuanced with the allegations of sexual abuse, which were supported by the siblings' family. In a press release from Netflix, the streamer said the anthology would explore “other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” Hm.
