Even though Netflix has already renewed Ryan Murphy's Monster anthology season for a third season, the producer opened up about considering an addition to the most recent second season. Charlie Hunnam will star in Monster season 3 as Ed Gein, but with new developments in the Menendez brothers' case, season 2 could get a new episode or two.

On Oct. 3, news broke that Lyle and Erik Menendez earned a new court hearing set for Nov. 26, which could result in either a resentencing or a new trial. It's the first development in their case in nearly 30 years, coming on the heels of their case being reexamined on TikTok in the past few years and the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix in September.

Ryan Murphy teases potential new Monsters episodes

Since the release of the fictionalized retelling of Lyle and Erik's story, Murphy has had quite a bit to say as the series became a hit and earned criticism for some of its content. Following the announcement of the Menendez brothers securing a new court hearing, Murphy suggested that he's mulling over the possibility of filming new episodes of Monsters on one condition.

Here's what the prolific producer told Variety about continuing the season:

"I think what I would be interested in doing, if Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] would agree to do it, is maybe one or two episodes that continue the story."

Murphy has been keeping busy with a generous handful of new shows across multiple streamers and networks this fall, so much so that some of his other shows have taken the backseat. However, he notes that if Monsters stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch were up for reprising their roles as Lyle and Erik Menendez, he would be "interested" in creating at least one new episode.

As of this writing on Oct. 4, Netflix has not announced a formal continuation of the series, and it's likely that Murphy was simply reacting in the moment to a question the outlet posed. But it's wholly unprecedented for a scripted limited series to have the option of filming one or two new episodes. Based on the show's viewership success, Netflix would probably be open to it, too.

In its first four days of release, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story clocked in with 12.3 million views, which was down from the anthology series first season Dahmer, but still impressive nonetheless. During its first full week of availability, the season attracted 2.7 billion viewing minutes. Over two weeks since its release, it's still in the top 3 on Netflix.

The Menendez case has been the topic of conversation in the weeks following the Netflix show's release, with series star Koch visiting the brothers in prison along with Kim Kardashian. The media mogul and budding actress has been an outspoken advocate for Lyle and Erik, insisting "they are not monsters" and speaking out in support of their release from their sentence.

While the means in which the case got to this point of considering new evidence are up for debate (Murphy has taken some of the credit), the spotlight is now on them in a positive way. A new documentary about the Menendez brothers, which they contributed to, will be released on Netflix on Oct. 7 and surely continue to help move their case in a forward direction.

We'll have to wait and see if Murphy will follow through on creating new episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story or if he will walk back previous statements and lend his support to the brothers in another way. Monster season 3 was said to begin filming sometime in October 2024, and Murphy's also gearing up for production on other new series. He could certainly pull it off.
