There's a Mom reunion happening on Netflix, but no, it's not a revival of any sort of the beloved CBS sitcom. Rather, Kristen Johnston has joined the main cast of Mom co-creator Chuck Lorre's upcoming Netflix sitcom starring Leanne Morgan. Oh, you know big laughs are on the way!

Deadline announced the casting on May 9 and revealed that Johnston will play Carol, the sister of Morgan's character Leanne. Carol sounds like she's a bit rough around the edges, which is exactly how we love our Kristen Johnston characters. She's childless with two divorces under her belt, and while she'd rather hang at the bar than attend Sunday mass, she doesn't play about her sister.

The series, which still doesn't have an official title as of this writing, centers on Leanne, a grandmother and mother who finds herself single for the first time in decades when her husband of over 33 years up and leaves her. She's forced to start all over with the help of her family, which includes her "fiercely loyal" and "ride-or-die" sister Carol.

Netflix previously announced in late April 2024 that the Leanne Morgan sitcom had officially been picked up for a 16-episode first season. The series will be executive produced by Lorre, Morgan, Judi Marmel, and Susan McMartin, who was also a writer and producer on Mom. The layers of the Mom reunion just continue and further confirm this new show will be funny.

Of course, Johnston's perhaps best known for her work on the hit NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, which ran for six seasons between 1996 and 2001 and earned the star two Emmy Award wins for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She's gone on to deliver memorable performances in titles like Sex and the City, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Bride Wars, ER, The Exes, and The Righteous Gemstones among others. Johnston was a series regular in Mom for season 7 and 8 before guesting in season 5 and recurring in season 6.

A production timeline hasn't been revealed, though with casting announcements heating up, filming seems primed to begin sometime soon, perhaps even as soon as early summer or fall. Given the 16-episode order, the sitcom could potentially be released in two parts, though a 2025 release date seems like a solid prediction right now. We'll share more about the show, including casting and filming information, as Netflix shares additional details.
