The Outer Banks and Riverdale crossover cinematic universe continues to grow as Madelyn Cline sets another new movie with an alum from The CW drama.

Earlier this month, news broke that the Outer Banks star would be co-headlining the romantic movie The Map That Leads to You alongside Riverdale's KJ Apa. Now, she's been cast as one of the leads of the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot film with Apa's Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes. (Maybe Cline will be starring opposite Lili Reinhart or Cole Sprouse next?!)

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the horror movie reboot's castings, which also includes The Little Mermaid live-action remake's Jonah Hauer-King, Atlanta vet Tyriq Withers, and Tiny Beautiful Things star Sarah Pidgeon. The new cast could potentially join the original '90s classic's Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who are in talks to reprise their roles.

Outer Banks meets Riverdale in new slasher movie reboot

The currently untitled I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will have a theatrical release on July 18, 2025 from Sony, which could potentially mean the movie will stream on Netflix by the end of 2025 should the streamer's deal with the studio hold until then. Apart from Cline and Mendes, the movie has another major Netflix connection that pretty much solidifies that it will be something great — pun intended.

I Know What You Did Last Summer reteams Mendes with Do Revenge co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who also wrote and directed the Netflix rom-com Someone Great. Robinson's directing the movie and also co-wrote the script with Sam Lansky from a previous pass by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, one of the producers of the 1997 blockbuster, will be on board as producer for the new installment, a really good sign for any purists.

Robinson's cult favorite Netflix teen comedy film, which ironically also starred original I Know What You Did Last Summer star Sarah Michelle Gellar, had such a stylized and unique sense of humor that will carry over so well to the slasher reboot. When the news broke of her casting, Mendes shared the news on Instagram with a post expressing her excitement about reuniting with her "revenge mommy" Robinson. Gellar even gave her blessing on her Instagram stories, too.

Personally, as a fan of the original horror flick, I couldn't be more excited for this new edition. The Hollywood Reporter suggests the reboot will take the Scream approach with the mixture of cast members from the classic — Hewitt and Prinze — and the new crew. We couldn't be in better hands with Robinson, a real millennial visionary who just gets it. The assignment of honoring '90s and '00s teen rom-coms was understood and exceeded with Do Revenge.

Curiously, the characters appear to be aged up a bit aged up compared to the original's college-aged characters, as the cast members are all between 25 and 30 years old. Obviously, they could all still pass as college students in some form, but it would be an interesting take for the newbies to be older. Still, Hewitt and Prinze's characters married in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Perhaps one of these next gen cast members will play their child...

If there's one thing Camila Mendes knows how to do, it's camp. Riverdale alone (watch all seven seasons on Netflix!) crafted her unique ability to sell the craziest of plot twists, and to watch her in a huge summer horror movie that's sure to deliver camp is nothing short of a post-Riverdale dream realized. Shining on the big screen as a scream queen with Madelyn Cline, Jonah-Hauer King, Sarah Pidgeon, and Tyriq Withers is going to be a can't-miss event.

Outer Banks, Riverdale, and The Little Mermaid fans, we will have to be patient until the movie is released next summer (easier said than done!). While reports didn't include a production timeframe, filming will likely begin soon in order to finish in time for the July 2025 release date. Cline will soon be on our Netflix watch lists again later this year with the release of Outer Banks season 4.
