Here's where This Is Us takes place (and where it was filmed)

If you're looking for something new to watch to kick off 2024, Netflix added all six seasons of NBC's Emmy Award-winning family drama series This Is Us in January. The series follows the multi-decade story of the Pearson family as they grapple with love and loss through time, painting a colorful and bittersweet portrait of the realities of family.

In the beginning of the series, we meet up with the Pearson family in the 1980s, where they live in Pittsburgh. Jack and Rebecca raise the Big Three in the Pennsylvania city, and they are all massive fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even though they have a proud appreciation for where they grew up, in the present day, none of the Big Three live in their hometown.

Kevin (Justin Hartley) became a successful television actor and lives in Los Angeles. Kate (Chrissy Metz) also lives in Los Angeles in the beginning of This Is Us, as she works as his assistant. Meanwhile, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) lives in New Jersey, the closest to their mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore), who's assumed to live in either New Jersey or upstate New York.

Throughout the show's run, each of the Big Three moves to different states or cities. Kevin moves to New York City and Randall moves to Philadelphia. While Toby (Chris Sullivan) landed a job in San Francisco, Kate ultimately does not make the move to the California city that's further north than Los Angeles. Rebecca and Miguel (Jon Huertas) also relocate to LA when Kate has a baby.

Although the series takes place in various states and cities across the United States, you might be surprised to learn that the primary filming location was Los Angeles, California.

This Is Us filmed mostly in Los Angeles

Most of the production for all six seasons of the series happened on the Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood. A lot of the interior scenes were filmed on the soundstage, while most of the common exterior sequences were likely filmed throughout the Paramount lot. But one of the coolest locations that series filmed at in Los Angeles was actress Alyson Hannigan's house.

In 2021, the How I Met Your Mother and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star revealed to SiriusXM's The Michelle Collins Show that This Is Us filmed in her Los Angeles home. (According to the New York Post, Hannigan sold the house in 2022 for about $18 million.) If you're wondering whose house Hannigan's doubled as in the show, it's the house Kevin builds in the future in Jack's honor, the house he moves into and the home where Rebecca passes away.

Aside from the show's chief filming locations on lots and on location in Los Angeles, the show also filmed on location in other areas, such as San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York City. Fans will remember the season 4 episode "New York, New York, New York," in which Jack and Rebecca travel to the Big Apple with the Big Three. The episode's present-day storyline also takes place and was filmed in New York City.
