Griselda, Train to Busan, and more to watch on Netflix this weekend, Jan. 26-28
By Mads Lennon
It's the last weekend of January, so why not relax and watch something entertaining on Netflix this weekend? The biggest release this week is definitely the Sofia Vergara-led miniseries Griselda, but there are some relatively new movies (released in 2023) that were just added to the catalog alongside all eight seasons of a beloved USA Network show.
Here's what to watch on Netflix this weekend.
Griselda
Griselda looks like the perfect show for anyone missing Narcos, La Reina del Sur, or Queen of the South. Featuring the first major dramatic role for Emmy-nominated actress Sofia Vergara, who stars in the titular role as Griselda Blanco, Griselda follows the Cocaine Godmother's rise to the top of the Miami drug trade. And yes, the series comes from Narcos veterans Doug Miro, Eric, Newman, and Carlo Bernard, so you know the show is in good hands.
Royal Pains (2009-2016)
Netflix surprised its subscribers by dropping all eight seasons of the popular USA series Royal Pains, part-medical drama and part-dramedy. The series follows a former E.R. doctor who gets fired after an important hospital VIP dies while under his care, despite Hank not being responsible for the death, he gets the misplaced blame.
After that, Hank up and moves to the Hamptons where he becomes a house-call doctor tending to the rich and famous. The series stars Mark Feuerstein, Paulo Costanzo, Reshma Shetty, Brooke D'Orsay, and more. With more than 100 episodes, it'll keep you busy for a long time.
Train to Busan (2016)
For those in the mood for something scary this weekend, I highly recommend watching (or rewatching) the Korean horror movie Train to Busan. Released in 2016, Train to Busan has largely been considered an instant classic and one of the best zombie movies of all time. Largely taking place on a train traveling to Busan, a group of passengers find themselves in the midst of a viral outbreak that they must fight through if they hope to survive.
Dumb Money (2023)
Dumb Money is the latest Sony allocation Netflix has landed as part of the deal between the company and the streaming service. Featuring a cast of recognizable faces like Sebastian Stan, Paul Dano, America Ferrera, Pete Davidson, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen, Dumb Money follows the infamous GameStop short squeeze that took place in 2021 and resulted in a bunch of regular people turning the tables on Wall Street.
The Hill (2023)
Fans of true stories and biopics won't want to miss out on The Hill, another recent Netflix acquisition that landed on the streamer this past week. The film revolves around Rickey Hill and his quest to become a Major League Baseball player despite having a degenerative spinal disease and a very strict pastor father, played by Dennis Quaid. The Hill is an inspiring tale based on a true story.
