Griselda soundtrack: All songs featured in the crime drama by episode
By Mads Lennon
Netflix has a significant selection of crime dramas, including acclaimed shows like Narcos, its spinoff Narcos: Mexico, and Ozark. The latest to join the mix is a female-led series about Colombian drug runner Griselda Blanco, with Emmy-nominated actress Sofia Vergara taking over the titular role in the series.
The six-episode limited series comes from Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman, who co-created Griselda alongside Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard.
To underscore Griselda's ambitious climb to the top of the Miami drug scene in the 1980s, Griselda features an excellent musical score created by the Grammy and Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera. Rivera previously worked on The Queen's Gambit, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and Lessons in Chemistry.
Setting the right musical tone for Griselda
Discussing the music chosen for the series, co-creator Eric Newman says they wanted a mixture of period-accurate tunes, which wasn't too challenging considering how much great music was made during the 1970s and '80s.
"The music in GRISELDA is very much of a time and place that people feel like they know, whether it’s from MIAMI VICE, or from Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, or more recently from COCAINE COWBOYS. I’m really pleased with our score and soundtrack."
- Eric Newman, Griselda co-creator
Speaking specifically about Rivera's score, series director Andrés Baiz says they wanted Rivera to feel like he could be bold and unrestrained.
"I didn’t want a minimalistic score, I wanted something operatic and he went for it. The score is very out there, it’s ballsy. It reflects Griselda as a character very much," he reflects during an interview shared by Netflix press.

Colombian singer and songwriter Karol G makes her acting debut in Griselda
Of course, when speaking of music it's also worth mentioning that the popular Grammy-winning Colombian artist Karol makes her acting debut in the show as Griselda's friend Carla. She was reportedly going to play an even bigger role in the series, but ultimately revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she asked for a smaller part to play.
"I was a little sponge absorbing everything on the set and learning a lot from my other castmates and I'm super happy. I think everything is so beautiful. It came [out] so beautiful. I'm super excited for what the future brings," says the singer.
