Yes, The Gentlemen star Theo James is really British (and he's married!)

Whether you know him as Four, Cameron Sullivan, Sidney Parker, or any of his various dynamic characters, Theo James has been one of the top talents in Hollywood for over a decade ever since breaking out during the dystopian YA heyday of the 2010s. Now an Emmy-nominated actor, he's back in Netflix's Guy Ritchie crime drama series The Gentlemen as Eddie Halstead.

And yes, it's his real accent! The actor was born in High Wycombe, England and raised in Askett, which is a hamlet in Buckinghamshire, England. While English, James is also of Greek and Scottish descent.

He graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in philosophy before honing his acting craft at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Maybe he learned a trick or two during his schooling in theatre, because while filming Divergent and The Time Traveler's Wife, James was known to keep using his American accent even when the director called cut.

Back in 2013 when speaking about Divergent ahead of its release the following year, James said that maintaining an American accent even when cameras aren't rolling helps keep his performance singular rather than his real English accent slipping into takes. Here's what he told MTV:

"For me, I think I find it easier to just be in the space all the time, so it becomes second nature, because if I'm switching back and forth, suddenly you're going to get a weird Cockney Four. Because I'm obviously a Cockney. I hope [Shailene] thinks I'm a Cockney."

Theo James was born on Dec. 16, 1984, making the actor 39 years old as of The Gentlemen's release in March 2024. By the end of the year, the Sagittarius will be celebrating his 40th birthday. He had his breakthrough role in the first Divergent movie 10 years ago in 2014 at the age of 29. It's awesome to see how much he has accomplished in his career since turning 30, continuing to take on challenging and exciting roles that connect with widespread audiences.

After being in a relationship since 2009 when they met while attending the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, the couple married in August 2018.

In 2021, they welcomed their first child, a daughter, and two years later in September 2023, they welcomed their second child. Since James isn't on social media, the pair mostly keep their relationship private, though Kearney posts a few snaps of Theo (none of their two children!) on her Instagram page.
