Dev Patel's Monkey Man will no longer release on Netflix, going to theaters instead

It looks like we won't be seeing Dev Patel return to Netflix with a new project anytime soon because Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw production company just snagged his upcoming movie Monkey Man from the streaming service. Now, it's set to be released in theaters in April 2024 by Universal Pictures. If you weren't aware, Peele and his Monkeypaws production company have a distribution deal with Universal.

We first learned of Monkey Man back in 2018 when it was announced that Patel would be making his directorial debut with a new action thriller flick. Then, in March 2021, it was announced that production had been finished and that Netflix had bought the streaming rights to the movie. However, Netflix still hadn't given Monkey Man a release date yet.

Now it's January 2024, and we finally have an official release date. It just won't be released on Netflix. It'll be opening in theaters on Friday, April 5, 2024. Peele announced this good news via his X account. He even released the action-packed official trailer to get people pumped up for its release. Check it out below!

So, how did this move to theaters even happen? Well, Peele got a chance to see a screening of Monkey Man and absolutely loved it. So, he acquired the film from Netflix and decided to give it a theater release instead.

Monkey Man is an action thriller directed by Patel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. The film takes place in Mumbai, India, and follows an ex-con who after getting out of prison sets out on a quest for vengeance against those who took everything from him many years ago.

Patel plays the role of the ex-con, Kid. Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande also star in the cast.

It's been a long time coming but people will finally get to see Monkey Man this April. Will you be headed to the movie theater to see it on April 5?
