Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are fighting Twisters, but not on Netflix

The new Twister sequel won't be streaming on Netflix after theaters, but it could be coming to Peacock or Max by the end of 2024.

Nothing says summer blockbuster quite like a big-budget disaster movie featuring the hottest movie stars of the moment. That's exactly what we're getting this summer with the release of Twisters, the standalone sequel to the '90s classic Twister. Unfortunately, neither the original movie nor the new sequel are available on Netflix or will be in the near future.

Twisters hits theaters on Friday, July 19, and with its advanced positive reception and huge marketing push, it's likely to remain in theaters for a few months before becoming available to rent and own on video on demand platforms. Ahead of its release, there's no confirmed streaming release date, though the movie's expected to drop on a streaming platform later this year.

Twisters won't be on Netflix after theaters

Because Twisters is a co-production between Universal Pictures (which handles the North American distribution) and Warner Bros. (which handles the international distribution), it could wind up heading to either Peacock or Max after theaters. Screen Rant predicts a release on Peacock this fall, while Decider predicts a release on Max sometime later this year.

Either way, in order to watch the movie on either streamer, you will need to have a subscription. Currently, you can watch the original 1996 movie Twister on Max with a subscription. Also, never say never: Sometime in the way far off distant future both movies could find their way to Netflix. We'll be sure to keep Netflix fans posted on both movies' availability on the platform.

Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, who starred in the movie Where the Crawdads Sing, and Glen Powell, who starred in Anyone But You and the Netflix original Hit Man. All three of the aforementioned movies were huge hits on Netflix! Also featured in the thriller about storm chasers hunting down tornadoes are Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, David Corenswet, and more familiar faces, including James Paxton, the son of the original movie's late star Bill Paxton.

Check out the official synopsis via Universal Pictures:

"Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives."

Obviously, Twisters would be the kind of movie to do wild numbers on Netflix, but that's just not in the cards, at least not right away. Studios with their own streaming services tend to call dibs on their own content before licensing them to other streaming services. For instance, Netflix's deal with DreamWorks allows for those movies to stream on Peacock for a bit before heading to Netflix for a limited time, after which they return to Peacock. Even Sony's deal with Netflix has fine print on the availability.

As much as I know many of us would love to watch both movies on Netflix, we'll have to head on over to Max for the 1996 favorite and the movie theater this summer to catch the new sequel. Fingers crossed their fates change at some point! For now, check out the trailer for the new blockbuster and make a plan for when and how you're going to watch it:
