What the Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 ending means for part 2
It's been a while, but Cobra Kai is finally back! The beloved Netflix dramedy serves as a sequel spinoff to the Karate Kid movies, following senseis Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso in parenthood. Though it took them a while to see eye to eye, the two are finally in a solid place in season 6. No, their relationship is not perfect, but they're actually on the same side.
Following the events of the season 5 finale, Johnny and Daniel merge dojos, though it's not as simple as it might sound. Between choosing a new name for their dojo to who gets to teach lessons when, Johnny and Daniel still have conflict, but nothing compared to their past. As for the kids, however, that's a different story. While Sam and Tory are finally civil — and maybe even friends? — in season 6, everything changes for the core group of kids at the end of the first part.
Cobra Kai season 6 consists of 15 episodes, though as you probably noticed, only five are out right now. That's because Netflix has broken up the final season into three parts, with part 1 out now, part 2 out in November, and the finale coming out in 2025. The way part 1 concludes, we have an idea of what we can expect in part 2. So let's get into it!
WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Cobra Kai season 6 part 1.
As mentioned, Johnny and Daniel are working together in season 6 alongside Chozen. Johnny eventually comes around and agrees to keep their dojo name Miyago-Do, while Miguel and Robby are closer than ever. Sam and Tory begin bonding, a pleasant surprise for Miguel and Robby. Carmen is still pregnant, and, unfortunately, she and Johnny don't have a place to raise their daughter after Johnny's ceiling caves in. He begins working at Daniel's car dealership to start saving up money for a better place and for their child.
College and the Sekai Taikai are on everyone's minds
Another major storyline in Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 is the kids' struggle to decide where to apply for college. While Demetri and Hawk have always planned to go to the same school, Hawk is unsure once he visits another college and attends a frat party, realizing there are more options out there. Miguel is disappointed when he gets deferred. Tory, meanwhile, doesn't have a plan for college and puts all of her efforts into taking care of her mom and practicing karate. Daniel struggles in these episodes when he finds out something troubling about Mr. Miyagi's past.
After escaping from prison, Kreese is back and, unsurprisingly, training his dojo. He brings back Cobra Kai with the help of Kim Da-Eun, training new students.
The biggest part about season 6 part 1, however, is the upcoming Sekai Taikai, an international tournament in Barcelona, Spain that Miyagi-Do plans on competing in. Johnny is worried about their two biggest female stars, Tory and Sam, as now that they're getting along they seem scared to hurt each other. This all changes, however, when Tory finds out that her mom has died. Though she seems to have been getting better, her mom suffers a fatal pulmonary embolism. This, of course, absolutely devastates Tory, but she doesn't know how to channel that pain. She shows up at the dojo and is super aggressive when competing against Sam.
Miyagi-Do gets an unexpected opponent
In the end, it's decided that Tory will not compete in the Sekai Taikai, and the following have been chosen: Sam, Robby, Miguel, Devon, Demetri, and Hawk. The fifth episode ends with the crew going to Barcelona, where they're shocked to see Kreese and Kim show up. To make matters even more shocking, however, Tory is competing with them! She's left Miyagi-Do for Cobra Kai, and Robby looks the most surprised of the group, understandably. Tory and Robby are still dating in season 6, though we're not sure if they've had a breakup offscreen before the Sekai Taikai.
Of course, Kreese's karate style is aggressive and ruthless, something his students have taken on. Why does Tory join Cobra Kai again? Well, Kreese confronts her before the Sekai Taikai and explains why he shut her out; it was supposedly to protect her as he was planning his prison escape. He tells Tory that she will never truly belong in Miyagi-Do, and in her grief, she likely believes that. Though he's not a great guy, Kreese does make Tory feel supported. And that's what she needs at this moment.
The fifth episode ends there, leaving Miyagi-Do left to wonder what's going on. For season 6 part 2, we'll be getting to see how the Sekai Taikai shakes out, and I'm sure Tory won't be staying with the enemy for long. She just needs to speak with Robby and the rest of the dojo; they want to be there for her, but they might just not know how. As for who will win, that's anyone's guess, though I'll be rooting for Miyagi-Do! Tory could end up victorious considering when she won the All Valley, she was heartbroken to learn it was rigged. She needs her real win.
There's likely to be much more after the Sekai Taikai
Considering we're already at the Sekai Taikai five episodes into a 15-episode season, we can assume that there will be more subplots introduced after the big tournament. We'll likely resolve this storyline by the mid-point of part 2, opening up more drama to come. We'll also likely get to see Carmen give birth and begin raising her daughter with Johnny, while the kids will figure out where they're going to college.
I imagine the season 6 finale will see the kids graduate high school and get ready to go off to college, though we'll definitely need another big storyline on top of that. Because Netflix is holding the finale for 2025 and is calling it "The Finale Event," we know it's going to be a major one. Another tournament, perhaps? I wouldn't be surprised!
Of course, remember I'm just speculating based on what we've seen so far in part 1, and none of my predictions have been confirmed by Netflix. That said, the first five episodes of season 6 set up what's to come nicely, and it's hard not to theorize what'll happen for Miyagi-Do with the next batch of episodes.
Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 premieres on Nov. 15, 2024.
