Andrew Scott is just the latest actor to bring Patricia Highsmith's creation to life, but Ripley has existed since the 1950s in her popular crime novels. The character of Tom Ripley has also been shown on-screen before Netflix, in movies like Purple Noon and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

The more popular film adaptation is the 1999 version The Talented Mr. Ripley from director Anthony Minghella and it stars Matt Damon as Tom Ripley with Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge and Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf. Right now, The Talented Mr. Ripley is streaming on Showtime and Paramount+ Showtime. You can also rent or purchase the movie from digital retailers like Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.
