When a new romantic comedy comes out, whether in theaters or on Netflix, you can never be too sure how romantic the movie's romance will be. Will it be a little too R-rated and make the movie an uncomfortable watch with the family, or will it be just PG-13 enough for a passable watch with your parents? Thankfully, Netflix's A Family Affair passes the test with its age rating.
The romantic comedy stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King and tells the story of a Hollywood assistant whose famous movie star boss starts dating her mother. Beyond the slight age gap between the two, the obvious discomfort changes the dynamic and opens old wounds. But don't worry, this is one romantic comedy that's actually funny. And it's not rated R!
A Family Affair is only rated PG-13
According to the movie's page on Netflix, A Family Affair has been rated PG-13 for sexual content, partial nudity, and some strong language. The romantic comedy is your standard PG-13 movie and doesn't push the envelope in shocking ways. Each of the categories its earned the rating for are minimal, so here's a rough guide to what to expect from each one.
Sex and nudity: The movie contains one sex scene between a male and a female character, though nothing is shown beyond the female straddling a male on a bed. They are both undressed though the scene doesn't feature any graphic nudity. While a bit awkward, it's not R-rated enough to be cringey to watch with your parents. However, younger viewers should probably cover their eyes.
Violence and language: There's no violence in the movie, unless you count a character running into a doorframe and hitting their head violent. The language in the movie is a bit heightened with the use of some profanity, including "b-tch" and "f-ck" (though that particular word appears in the lyrics of a song playing over a scene and it's easy to miss). All in all, the language is not excessive at all.
Overall, A Family Affair isn't the kind of romantic comedy that will have you wishing you didn't agree to watch it with your parents for movie night. It's funny and light but with lots of heart. Heck, it might even start conversations about grief and and parental relationships. Little kids won't have an interest in the movie and it's not completely appropriate, but it's a safe watch for mature viewers.
