4 best new Netflix movies to watch (and 2 to skip) in September 2024
By Reed Gaudens
Whether you're heading to the movie theater or you're curling up on the couch with your favorite streaming service, fall is the best time for new movies. It's the season when some of the best movies of the year hope to score Oscar nominations and when huge blockbusters look to take advantage of the impending holiday rush. Netflix is already starting to kick off its fall 2024 movie slate.
September might still have a couple weeks of summer left to its name before the calendar officially turns to fall and the always highly anticipated spooky season, but Netflix isn't wasting any time to roll out the red carpet for some of its biggest movies of the year. This month, awards contenders like His Three Daughters and Will & Harper arrive along with the larger-than-life popcorn movie Uglies.
If you're looking at the list of Netflix new releases coming in September 2024 and you're wondering which new movies are worth adding to your watch list and which can be skipped, here's our suggestion for six of the month's best new movies!
Rebel Ridge
Skip! Released on Sept. 6, Rebel Ridge features a talented cast consisting of Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, and AnnaSophia Robb. The drama centers on a former Marine whose bid to post bail for his cousin leads to his run-in with the corrupt local police. With the help of a court clerk, the Marine looks to dismantle the conspiracy and get justice. If you're not interested in these kinds of crime dramas, the over two-hour runtime likely won't hold your attention. Skip unless it's your cup of tea!
Uglies
Watch! It's been a long time coming for Netflix to release its adaptation of Scott Westerfeld's novel Uglies, but the movie will finally be released on Sept. 13. The movie takes place in a dystopian world where teenagers are forced to receive cosmetic procedures to become "pretty." When one girl refuses the surgery, a revolution seemingly begins. Uglies stars Joey King, Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, and Laverne Cox, which is reason enough to check it out for movie night.
Rez Ball
Watch! Who doesn't love tearing up to a good inspirational sports movie every now and again? There are plenty out there, including some well-known throwbacks, but Netflix throws a new one into the mix on Sept. 27 with its original movie Rez Ball. The film follows a basketball team in Chuska, New Mexico, which has a strong Native American heritage. The teams looks to win a state championship game after losing one of their own. Seriously, no one's making it out of this one with dry eyes!
His Three Daughters
Watch! Another tearjerker, His Three Daughters lands on Netflix on Sept. 20 and is a must-watch for three reasons: Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne. No matter what the movie's about, seeing those three names on a poster for the same film should be enough to get anyone to watch. But here's what it's about: The talented actresses play estranged sisters coming together to care for their ill father and maybe repair their rocky relationship. Again, have the tissues at the ready.
A True Gentleman
Skip! If you're looking to spice up movie night with a sexier pick, how about the Turkish romantic drama A True Gentleman? The movie centers on a male escort who reassesses his life when he actually falls in love. Obviously, if sexy isn't what you look for in a movie, this one's probably best left in the skip pile when it premieres on Sept. 26. But if you're a fan of the 365 Days or Fifty Shades movies, A True Gentlemen could be worth the watch.
Will & Harper
Watch! The only documentary on this list, Will & Harper is just too lovable to leave off the list. Premiering Sept. 27, the new Netflix original doc follows Will Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele as they take to the road to grow closer after Harper comes out as a trans woman. When the trailer dropped online, nearly everyone who watched was overcome with emotion, and it's clear to see why. The film is an important exploration of friendship, identity, community, and humanity, and everyone needs to watch, no questions asked.
