It's been a long time coming, Outer Banks season 5 has finally arrived on Netflix. The Pogues set out on their final mission, which finds them grieving the loss of JJ following his death at the hands of Chandler Groff, his birth father. Now without their friend and the Blue Crown, the group (plus Rafe!) set off on a revenge mission to settle the score and finally, hopefully get a win.
As fans knew going into Outer Banks season 5, this is the final season of the series. Once you watch the series finale episode, it will be clear that the beloved Netflix show has officially reached its natural ending. Without giving away any spoilers from the show's finale, the final episode delivers closure for the characters and leaves no lingering cliffhangers to keep the door open for season 6.
Being so, don't start rallying for Outer Banks season 6 because it simply isn't happening. The cast and crew crafted an action-packed final season to send the Pogues off with a cathartic and emotional bang. But there's still hope that we could eventually return to the Pogues' slice of paradise on Earth, as Netflix appears to be considering an exciting spinoff series that's officially in the works.

Outer Banks prequel spinoff in development at Netflix
Ahead of the Outer Banks season 5 released, Deadline reported that the series' creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke were beginning work on a prequel spinoff series that's tentatively titled Kildare. The series would turn the clock back 20 years and follow the sociopolitical separation of the fictional island's division between the Kooks on Figure 8 and the Pogues on The Cut.
The Pates and Burke have been conceptualizing an Outer Banks spinoff series for years, previously speaking on the idea of a prequel that explores the past in interviews dating back to 2023. According to Deadline, the prequel spinoff has now been placed in formal development by Netflix and is "gaining momentum" behind the scenes with the sire series now completed.
In an interview with Deadline, Josh Pate revealed early details about the spinoff and the current process: "We’re working on the script. We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be."

Pate also explained the premise of the prequel and the relevance of its story to the original series and the current political climate: "It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started. How did this rift start?"
Burke further teased that the prequel spinoff would contain both characters OBX fans already know as well as new characters, confirming that with the rewind back to two decades in the past, the offshoot would be centered in the generation of the show's parents. Those familiar faces would probably end up being Ward Cameron, Big John, and even Chandler Groff and Shoupe.
There are plenty more Pogue parents to pull into the mix, like Sarah's mom, who we finally met in season 5, and maybe also John B's mom. The prequel spinoff has an incredible amount of history and story to pull from that Outer Banks could only scratch the surface of during the Pogues' treasure hunting missions, including how the social dynamics were different at the turn of the century.
So far, Netflix hasn't shared any official details or formally announced an Outer Banks prequel spinoff series. We don't know whether the series will ultimately come to fruition, though we can stay optimistic. However, we know for sure that Outer Banks season 6 isn't happening. Maybe we can keep our fingers crossed for a possible reunion movie with a new adventure years and years into the future.
