Each day we're getting closer and closer to reuniting with the Pogues (and Rafe) in Outer Banks season 5. There's still a fair amount of waiting to go until they are back on our screens with their final adventure, but Netflix shared an exciting release update that fans will definitely love since a frustrating aspect from the previous season has likely been avoided.
When we last caught up with the Pogues in Outer Banks season 4 over a year ago, the 10-episode season dropped in two parts. Five episodes released in October 2024, and the remaining five were released less than one month later in November 2024. Naturally, fans weren't thrilled with the split season after being able to binge-watch the past three.
However, the fifth and final season sounds like it's going back to the binge format. While speaking at the Next On Netflix presentation on March 18, 2026, Netflix bosses Bela Bajaria and Jinny Howe spoked extensively about Netflix's previous release models, including splitting tentpole series into batches, releasing some originals on an annual basis, and keeping others on a two-year schedule.
Outer Banks season 5 not expected to drop in two parts
Most intriguingly, in Deadline's report of the event, the outlet specifically noted that Outer Banks season 5 was expected to revert back to a binge release model, which would mean that all 10 episodes would drop at the same time. It's an interesting change given it's the highly anticipated final season, but it wouldn't be the first Netflix show to switch up its release strategy.
Fellow Netflix originals such as Emily in Paris, The Witcher, and Virgin River have been previously released in parts or batches and then reverted from that model with their next seasons. For the most part, batch releasing has been part of Netflix's strategy in the wake of production delays from the pandemic and the dual strikes, but it's still in effect for titles like Bridgerton and Stranger Things.

When it comes to Outer Banks, it's not the kind of series that really lends itself to a two-part drop. Unless it were to be released weekly, a release strategy other streaming services still rely on like tradition television, a full binge-watch is the correct way to join the Pogues on their adventures. After all, the split in season 4 didn't especially work and felt like it was decided on after the fact.
Sure, Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ended on a cliffhanger about a major revelation about JJ's paternity, underscoring how big of a story JJ still had in store in part 2, but splitting the season interrupted the overall momentum. You'd think a show that employs cliffhangers at the end of every episode could thrive with batch releasing, but it's not what the fans ultimately want.
It's exciting that Netflix appears to be walking back this strategy and won't be capitalizing on the fact that it's the final season and more eyeballs will likely be tuning in to see what happens. A two-part release would extend the life cycle of OBX season 5, but a full-season drop delivers the complete sending in one shot. Netflix could still change course and go batch to parts, but let's keep our fingers crossed.
Outer Banks season 5 wrapped filming in December 2025 and has been confirmed for a release sometime in 2026. An official release window hasn't been revealed, but we can likely expect the final season to arrive this summer. Stay tuned for even more updates!
