Outer Banks season 5 prepares for justice and revenge in explosive farewell trailer

After five seasons of treasure hunts and near-death adventures, the Pogues are finally ready to put their days of risking their lives on the run behind them in Outer Banks season 5. The fan-favorite Netflix original series drops its final episodes on Thursday, Aug. 20, and ahead of the final season's arrival, the farewell trailer is full of teases of what to expect. Including... magic?

Netflix shared the Outer Banks season 5 trailer less than one month before the final season hits our watch lists, leaving fans to lap up each and every hint within the two-minute tease. Unsurprisingly, JJ's death looms large over the Pogues and acts as the driving force behind their actions, including Kiara's continued hunt for the Blue Crown, which she reveals can "bring back the dead."

Will Kiara pursue the Crown with the intention of putting this legend to the test and try her hand at resurrecting JJ? If that's what she's willing to fight for, she's not going to be alone, as the Pogues are riding together once again for their last adventure. The trailer suggests this could be their most dangerous one yet, with explosions, mile-high climbs, and high-sea battles.

Sure, that's par for the course for the Pogues, but the stakes couldn't be higher as they seek to free themselves from the chase they have been on for years. Check out the trailer below!

Even if Kie doesn't hold onto to the hope that getting the Blue Crown back from Groff could actually mean bringing JJ back from the dead, there's no doubt that justice and revenge is the name of the game for the Pogues. Beyond getting justice for JJ, they will have to get justice for themselves after they become public enemy No. 1 in their own home, and not even just in the eyes of the Kooks.

In addition to dropping the Outer Banks season 5 trailer, which dares to leave fans breathless and itching for Aug. 20 to get here faster, Netflix also revealed the official synopsis for the final season:

"Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats. With Chandler Groff still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts—and an uneasy alliance with Rafe—to keep from falling apart for good. Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning. It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home… one final time."

Of course, there's also the Rafe of it all, and the Pogues are remaining in his good graces in the final season, at least as long as that's possible. As he laid out in the season 4 finale, they need him, and as much as he would hate to admit it, he also needs them. It's a strange alliance that no one would have seen coming just a few seasons ago, but this just might be the best part of season 5.

There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the OBX5 trailer of Rafe kissing a woman who looks a lot like Kie, and while fans who have been shipping Rafe and Kie might get briefly excited that it's finally happening, pausing the frame reveals that it's actually Rafe's fiancé Sofia. That's not to pour water on shippers' hopes because for all we know, Rafe and Kie could still have their moment.

But Kie might still be too consumed with her grief about JJ, and who could blame her? The trailer shows her waking from a dream (nightmare?) about him and first-look images finds her looking sullen while in church with her family. Things are at least looking more hopeful for John B and Sarah's relationship and Pope and Cleo's relationship in spite of the, you know, constant danger.
