Well, all good things come to an end, and that sadly includes Outer Banks, which closed out its five-season run with the season 5 finale.

If you’ve made it to this post, you’re either someone who loves a good spoiler and wants to know how the show ends before you dive in, or you’re someone looking to get a recap and some added clarification about the series finale. Either way, welcome my fellow Pogue. We’ve made it to the final chapter in what has been an amazing journey, and the final episode of Outer Banks certainly did not hold back in giving us some epic moments and one hell of an ending.

Now, you likely have guessed that spoilers are ahead, but allow me to give you a courtesy spoiler warning before we get into revisiting the final episode of Outer Banks and how the series finale brings the Pogues’ journey to an end.

The series finale begins with the Pogues returning to the Outer Banks, and a storm is brewing, and no, not the figurative one but an actual full-blown hurricane. Needless to say, chaos ensues as everyone is trying to get off the island before the storm hits. There is a lot that goes down in the series, but there are two particular storylines that play a pivotal role in the actual ending to the series, so let’s break those threads down before we get into how Netflix brought it on home with the ending of the series finale.

Kiara kills Groff as Rafe manages to evade capture

The two most notable storylines that impact the episode interestingly have to do with Kiara and Rafe.

Upon returning to the Outer Banks, the Pogues learn that Groff tried to kill Rose and then stole the Royal Merchant gold. Rose begs the Pogues to help her get the gold back, offering to cut them in, but the Pogues aren’t having it. They’re not about to do all the dirty work just for Rose to try to then only give them a cut of the gold, which was rightfully theirs. The Pogues are determined to find the gold and split up to try to find Groff.

As the Pogues are working to find Groff and go through a few side quests, Rafe is on his own journey and is determined to free Sofia. Rafe enlists Barry’s help in creating a distraction so that he can sneak into the police station to free Sofia, which he successfully does after taking out two officers. Shoupe follows after Rafe and Sofia, but a tree falls on him during this pursuit, pinning him down. Rather than leaving Shoupe there to die, Rafe and Sofia go back and help free him. Rafe admits to killing Peterkin and tells Shoupe he’s never coming back as he urges him not to follow after them once they free him. To our surprise, Shoupe allows Rafe to slip away with Sofia.

Elsewhere, Groff is working to get the gold out of the Outer Banks and steals a boat to use to make his escape. Unfortunately for him, Kiara finds Groff as he’s loading the gold onto the boat. After watching him load the gold onto the boat, Kiara jumps onto the boat and climbs on board, hiding from Groff until the moment strikes for her to attack.

When Groff has his back turned to her, Kiara leaps on him and stabs him. She confronts him about why he had to kill JJ when he could have just taken the crown, but there’s really no leveraging with a crazy man. A major fight ensues between the two, and it really looks like Groff is going to kill Kiara, but Kiara thought one step ahead. As they faced off, Kiara managed to throw ropes from the sail on him and trigger the ship’s mechanics, which sent him flying up into the sky.

The mast of the ship then snaps, leaving Groff dangling above the ferocious waters below with the rope being the only thing holding the mast to the ship and stopping Groff from falling into the water. While Kiara showed mercy during earlier encounters and couldn’t find it inside herself to kill Groff, this time is different. She then cuts the rope, sending Groff falling into the ocean with the mast, which pulls him down into the water to his death

After killing Groff, the boat begins taking on water, and Kiara has no choice but to begin throwing the gold overboard to try to eliminate some of the weight. She’s able to get a distress call with her coordinates to John B, Sarah, and Pope as she then focuses on throwing the gold off the boat. And this is when the stories come together again.

The wind causes what’s left of the sail to swing in Kiara’s direction, which sends her into the water. She sets off a flare, but things aren’t looking good. The eye of the storm brings a calm as she fires off another flare and asks for JJ to help her. Call it coincidence or JJ answering Kiara’s cry for help, but John B, Sarah, and Pope find Kiara in time to save her from the storm. Now they just need to get back to the lighthouse where Rafe and Sofia are taking shelter. Thankfully, Rafe gets the lighthouse’s light on, and the Pogues use it to guide themselves back to shore safely.

After the hurricane, the Pogues help Rafe and Sofia load up their getaway boat. He says goodbye to everyone and apologizes for all he did. Knowing he cannot stay on the Outer Banks or return due to the actions of his past, Rafe bids a final goodbye to Sarah and the Pogues as he and Sofia make their exit.

How does Outer Banks end?

After the storm dies down, Pope and the Pogues begin a search for the gold. It looked like it might be lost at sea, but thankfully our Pogues get their happy ending. During a dive, John B finds the gold, and they’re able to recover all $400 million of it. And this is when we enter the final stretch, which brings about a series of time jumps as we learn more about what happens after the Pogues recover the gold.

First, we head to the Bahamas. Pope shows up and gets down on one knee to propose to Cleo, and she happily accepts his proposal. We then learn that they use the gold to bypass immigration issues so Cleo can become a citizen and return to OBX. The gold also helped John B. settle his debt with the drug lord

When the insurance company looked into Dale Zeasy’s business, they found the finances weren’t legal, and he was arrested. This gave the Pogues the opportunity to begin buying land back to remake the island as they wanted.

Sarah and John B. commissioned the construction of the Routledge House to keep it the same as the original design. Kiara bought back the old Maybank property and began to rebuild, while also gifting her parents a yacht for all their troubles. Meanwhile, Pope rebuilt Heyward’s Seafood and bought Tannyhill.

As our update reel continues, we learn that Kiara was able to move forward and became a marine biology intern, and we learn she dedicated a bench on the beach where she met JJ in his honor. Finally, we see Sarah and John B welcome their baby. That’s when we fast-forward a year.

In this time jump, we see that John B and Sarah’s home has been finished and enter the house on a very special day: Sarah and John B’s wedding! Surrounded by family and friends—and Topper for some reason—John B and Sarah exchange their vows and are officially pronounced husband and wife. The pair kiss as Sarah takes their baby, and they all walk back down the aisle. This is when we learn that they honored JJ by naming their son after him as John B, and Sarah rang the bell John B’s father used to call him back home before the Pogues paused for a photo together in front of the tree. The credits then begin to roll as we get some fun shots from the couple’s wedding as the show comes to an official end.
