Netflix just announced the news that fans of The God of the Woods have been waiting for.
The new Netflix series based on The God of the Woods by Liz Moore officially started production on Friday, June 12, in the Adirondacks and Hudson River Valley of upstate New York.
According to a Netflix press release, creators Liz Hannah and Moore, who also wrote the book, released a statement as filming started: "We're thrilled to be filming in the state that inspired the story and the region where it’s actually set. The Adirondacks have a fascinating history, and we feel inspired every time we’re there by the Park’s beauty and complexity. We hope to do it justice on the screen.”
The God of the Woods tells the story of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar, played by Stranger Things star Nell Fisher, who goes missing without a trace from a summer camp in upstate New York in 1975. Detective Judy Luptack, played by Maya Hawke, another Stranger Things star, is on the caste.
Here's the official synopsis for the series, via Netflix:
"The God of the Woods is a multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks, exploring the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13 year old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp—in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power."
The God of the Woods was one of the hottest books of 2024. Netflix announced it was adapting the project in late 2025 and confirmed its lead cast. Since then, we've learned more about the project, including the full cast of the series: Kerry Condon, Maya Hawke, Damon Gupton, Ella Rubin, Susannah Perkins, Benjamin Walker, Nell Fisher and Autumn Molina.
I loved this book, like millions of other readers. That's why it's an international bestseller. It's going to be an absolutely massive hit for Netflix.

The God of the Woods will likely premiere in 2027
Unfortunately, it's probably going to be a little while until we see The God of the Woods. Netflix has not revealed just how long The God of the Woods will be in production for. With things kicking off just now, and knowing how much ground they have to cover to bring this series to life, I would bet production will continue at least through the fall.
If that happens, or if it takes until the end of the year, we'll probably be waiting until at least late spring or summer before The God of the Woods hits Netflix.
While that's kind of a bummer, it actually makes a lot of sense. Netflix always has at least one big summer show that drops around the end of May for Memorial Day weekend to kick off summer or the end of June or the beginning of July for Fourth of July weekend. That's probably the earliest I'm expecting to see The God of the Woods on Netflix.
Obviously, it's still very early. We need production to go well without major delays and all that. If that happens, we'll be watching this great story on Netflix sometime around a year from now.
We'll share more updates on The God of the Woods as we find out. Stay tuned for more information about the new Netflix original mystery series.
