Netflix supernatural thriller featuring Stranger Things, Bridgerton stars sets fall release

If you're looking ahead to the Netflix original series still set for release in 2026 and feel some disappointment that not only has Stranger Things ended but Bridgerton won't be back again this year, you don't have to worry. There are plenty of great Netflix shows still to come at the end of the year, including Emily in Paris, Nobody Wants This, and a new thriller starring Josh Hartnett.

On July 14, Netflix announced the Below release date for Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. All six episodes of the thriller series, which was filmed on location in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, will be released at once as the perfect early fall treat. Josh Hartnett might be the biggest draw for fans to tune in, but on top of the gripping plot, the series boasts lots of a great talent from other Netflix titles.

Below starring Josh Hartnett sets October 2026 release date on Netflix

The iconic movie star headlines Below, the forthcoming Netflix supernatural thriller series arriving this fall from creator, showrunner, and executive producer Jesse McKeown, who previously worked on Netflix's hit series The Umbrella Academy. Having previously appeared in an episode of Black Mirror, Hartnett has appeared on Netflix, as has Charlie Heaton, Mackenzie Davis, Ruby Stokes, and more.

Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton, who played the character Jonathan Byers in all five seasons, makes his first reappearance on Netflix following the conclusion of the beloved series. While he's starring in the upcoming new Peaky Blinders series on Netflix, and recently appeared in HBO's Industry, Heaton has a starring role in Below as Wade Penney.

The cast also boasts Mackenzie Davis, who might be best known for titles like Halt and Catch Fire, Tully, and Station Eleven among other major film and television roles throughout the years, but to Netflix fans, Davis will always be Yorkie from the Emmy Award-winning Black Mirror episode "San Junipero." Davis stars in Below as Fonda Howander.

Ruby Stokes, who appeared in Bridgerton as the first Francesca Bridgerton before being recast with Hannah Dodd in season 3, stars in Below as Mary Penney. Stokes also headlined the short-lived Netflix supernatural thriller Lockwood & Co., which was a fan-favorite but was ultimately canceled after one season. She also appeared in the 2025 Netflix movie Jay Kelly.

Rounding out the main cast of Below, Willow Kean stars as Ruth Penney, Rohan Campbell (who you might recognize as Lonergan from Virgin River) plays Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn plays Noah. As for Hartnett, he's the most important Penney of them all as Calvin, a single father of three and a fisherman who's not only haunted by his father's death but terrorized by a mysterious sea creature.

"Calvin Penney is a big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman, living in a small Newfoundland town, who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late."

Netflix describes the series as "twisty" as it explores the relatable and "terrifying themes" of family and community, both of which bring unexpected but necessary change. Netflix hasn't shared an official trailer or teaser for Below just yet, but based on the photos the streamer released from the series, we can already tell it's going to be a chilling and suspenseful must-add to our watch lists.
