Netflix's Icebreaker series casts its Stassie Allen and Nate Hawkins

Hot on the heels of hockey romance bestsellers turned worldwide hit television series Heated Rivalry and Off Campus, Netflix will soon enter the rink with its own spin on a fan-favorite page turner. The streaming service is going full skates ahead on a series adaptation of Icebreaker by Hannah Grace, and just a few months after the show's announcement, its leads have now been cast.

Before cameras start rolling on Icebreaker this fall, Netflix revealed that Daisy Jelley and Connor Simos have been cast in the leading roles of Anastasia "Stassie" Allen and Nate Hawkins. The duo are relative newcomers, but their chemistry is on full display in the video released by Netflix. In the FaceTime-style video, the pair joke about skates and sharing a rink.

It's the perfect way to introduce Jelley (How to Have Sex, Geek Girl) and Simos (Subversion) to the diehard fans of Grace's novel, and by the looks of the early reception in the comments, they are more than satisfied about this casting. The actors received the ultimate seal of approval from readers, which is the coveted compliment that they "shook the book" and Jelley and Simos fell right out.

Icebreaker comes from showrunner Amanda Lasher, creator and executive producer Jade Halley Bartlett, and executive producers Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre. Grace, the book's author, is also on board the series adaptation as an executive producer, which means fans of the book don't have to worry about an adaptation this isn't faithful to the source material.

Speaking of the source material, for the uninitiated, Icebreaker takes place in college as an ice skater and hockey star collide in an unexpected way as their ambitions toward professional careers are thwarted by an unforeseen twist and, of course, their feelings for each other. In the press release for the series, Netflix shared the official synopsis:

"She’s the transfer gunning for Olympic gold. He’s the campus star chasing the NHL. But when an accident forces their teams to share one rink, Anastasia Allen and Nate Hawkins collide—and discipline gives way to obsession, because the only thing more dangerous than wanting to win is wanting each other."

Clearly, the casting announcement video was poking fun at the story's build-up toward Stassie and Nate's forced proximity at their shared rink. If you're looking for even more romance tropes from the forthcoming series, we also have a bit of enemies-to-lovers to look forward to from this couple. Thankfully, they are on the way to our screens as quickly as possible.

According to What's on Netflix, filming on Icebreaker begins on Oct. 2, which is just a few days removed from the official casting announcement. The first season is expected to wrap production in mid-February 2027, which means that Netflix will either debut the series in late 2027 or hold the exciting new romantic drama until early 2028. Let's hope for the former.
