A bunch of good films have already left Netflix in January. This makes sense as the streamer believes it's just good business to have a month start mostly anew. The turn of the month means new stuff to view, and room needs to be made.
Still, there are several movies that will be leaving Netflix in January, but we have until January 31 to watch the six films below. Or, you know, skip two of them. The decision is yours but just be forewarned that some of the films are good, and the others, not so much.
So what to watch and what to skip? We have some ideas. Just don't hate us if you disagree. (Please.)
Movies leaving Netflix in January that you should see (and two you shouldn't)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Watch! Sure, this movie is not exactly original (and the series with Donald Glover, Jr. is better), and it relies on its stars too much, but as long as you aren't looking for something akin to Citizen Kane, you will be happy. Most importantly, it is entertaining. Straight logic at times? Sure. But Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are devilishly good.
21 Jump Street
Watch! This film could have been awful. Based on the TV series starring Johnny Depp, the film could have been strikingly redundant. Instead, there is a slightly fresh take, thanks to stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, and while there is a bunch of action, there are just as many laughs. The film is also self-aware enough to know it cannot avoid cliches but instead embraces them.
22 Jump Street
Watch! Let's double down here. What makes the sequel almost as much fun as the original film is that the filmmakers knew they were not going to try to reinvent the wheel. To paraphrase Walter White from Breaking Bad, they were not in the Oscar business; they were in the entertainment business. They succeeded. So what if Hill and Tatum's characters went from high school to college? It worked.
The Next Karate Kid
Skip! The film's message is extremely mixed. The theme throughout the Karate Kid films was to protect yourself and never lose your self-respect, but don't antagonize. In this installment, the avoidance of fighting might be the goal, but then people fight anyway. This is an unnecessary part of the overall storyline of the films.
Whitney
Watch! Whitney Houston had a magical voice, but a troubled personal life. She had a drug problem and had to live with the knowledge that people would take more from her than they would return. The movie pulls no punches, and we see the tragic story arc of a young and happy woman turned into a shell of herself later in life.
White House Down
Skip! Another Channing Tatum vehicle, this one does not bring nearly as much enjoyment as the Jump Street movies. The issue is not Tatum but how the story is structured. The film is overly long, and there appear to be several places that would have made a fitting ending. The director disagreed, though, and went on about 20 minutes too long.
