Netflix is adding 5 new movies and shows this week (Jan. 19, 2025)

It's going to be a good week.

It's a light schedule for the additions to Netflix this week, with just five new arrivals. That doesn't mean there aren't some heavy hitters on the new slate, though. One of the most popular procedural series of the past 20 years returns to Netflix with its first five seasons.

Add the second season of a hit Netflix original show and an international thriller with major buzz, and you have about, oh, 92 hours of thrills and action to stave off those winter blues. Surely that's enough to keep you busy this week.

Oh, you need more? This week also sees the premiere of a French limited series that pokes fun at the alpha male phenomenon. You can expect the typical light touch of classic French cinema. It all kicks off with another Netflix original series. It's a reality show based on a standard formula but it promises to break that mold.

Can the W.A.G.s breakthrough for Netflix?

That would be W.A.G.s, as in Wives and Girlfriends. The series focuses on nine partners of major players from the world of sports and music. Well, some of them are major players. I think it's pretty cool that so many of the women in this series are probably better known in their chosen fields than their partners. It's a reality show, so yes, you can also expect a lot of conflict and blowups along the way. All 10 episodes will be available when W.A.G.s to Riches premieres on Jan. 22.

Switch gears the very next night for the second season of The Night Agent. The first season was a major hit for the streaming service. Season 2 will follow FBI agent Peter Sutherland even deeper into the murky world of espionage as he becomes an official night agent himself. Or does he? All will be revealed, assuming you want to binge all 10 episodes when it premieres. Check out the teaser:

Or, you could go old school and catch the first five seasons of NCIS. That's right, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is back on Netflix. Well, the first five seasons are, anyway. Yes, you can treat yourself to Mark Harmon and David McCallum in the days before gray hair. Pauly Perrette was always my favorite on the show, so this is a very welcome return indeed.

Time to shift gears for the only movie premiering this week, The Sand Castle. A young family visiting a seeming paradise uncovers secrets that, as the synopsis from Variety states, "spiral out of control... and is forced to confront harsh truths and difficult choices." This is one I'm really looking forward to seeing. Time for another trailer - oh, and as with virtually everything on Netflix, the film itself should also be available dubbed in English. Me, I'm a subtitle guy.

Take a deep breath: there's actually a comedy coming out this week

After all of the intrigue and drama, you'll probably be ready for a palate cleanser. Or a mind eraser, assuming you're of legal age. We can't help you with ID for the latter, but we can help you find the one comedy premiering this week. That would be Shafted, or as it was titled upon its release in France, Super Males. Four friends struggle with the realization that maybe they aren't all that alpha after all.

Based on the trailer, I'll be watching all six episodes this weekend. For the purists, yes, you can watch the original French version with English subtitles. Or go wild and watch it dubbed in Czech with Malay subtitles. Gotta love all those audio and captioning options on Netflix!
